I was thinking about SSM and how he is trying to get that Big mega fight, but I was also think about how he is the current WBA ww champion. I was wondering why he and other "mainstream" fighters get a pass when it comes to not defending against mandatory opponents? I know that he was going to fight Clottey or still may fight Berto but isn't there some obscure opponent ranked by the WBA waiting in line for a shot? Even though Shane will most likely blow out whatever mandatory opponent they put him in with and Clottey or Berto would be a much more competitive fight, its not fair and thus not sporting. Why should Clottey for ex. who is off a loss be it a close one get to jump in line over someone who was waiting for his chance? I understand that it is a business, but it is a sport first and we are forgetting the mantra of competition and just due when we accept boxing as some corporation or cartel.
I am just using SSM as an artificial example, and could use anyone of the boxing "stars" to illustrate the same point or or an unknown champion to convey a double standard.
Take Chad Dawson for example, he is a lesser known champion but since he is not a star yet if he didn't want to fight his mandatory because he "wasn't marketable" and didn't bring money then he would be ducking, but its perfectly fine for fighters of notoriety to do the same thing and be inactive for periods of a year or longer. My point is fair comp and fighters getting their shots > marketability and revenue. I don't care what fighters make or who does what numbers, just want to see good fights and unknown fighters get their chances and not be held back by divas in the boxing world. Any thoughts, opinions?
