Comments Thread For: Michael McKinson: I've Never Tasted Defeat And I'm Not Planning To

Michael McKinson is well aware of the uphill challenge he next faces. The unbeaten but largely untested British welterweight will make his U.S. debut against one of the hottest commodities in the sport in rising contender Vergil Ortiz Jr. (18-0, 18KOs).

I think Ortiz Jr will win a controversial decision

Vergil by Homicide in three. This guy has nothing to keep Ortiz off of him with. He's got Sven Ottke and Malignaggi type power , which is none. He should scout out a soft place to land after they set the ring up for the fights.

I think this will be a lot different to what many are expecting, as in McKinson won’t be a walkover job , but I can see McKinson getting told off for his judo knockdowns and not winning any rounds because the judges don’t score tickling punches

People just look at the mckinsons record and the KOs and assume he has no chance but the guy is tricky and unorthodox and for an agressive fighter like Ortiz it could pose some problems.

McKinson is a tricky southpaw. Power isn’t everything.

I expect Ortiz to win well, but if he steamrolls McKinson in a few rounds, I’ll be very impressed.

McKinson has generally been a bit ignored by most of the domestic welterweight scene in the UK because he’s high risk and low reward because he can just outbox you and be awkward, so for that reason he’s never really had much of a profile. he’s a clever fighter, not some basic stiff upright domestic fighter with no ring IQ. He could fiddle some decent fighters about if they underestimate him.

McKinson knocks Ortiz down, controversially in R1 & goes on to dominate rounds 2-4. Ortiz knocks McKinson down, less debatably, in R7. Ortiz takes a SD.

Agree, but would add that we won't know if Ekow Essuman could overwhelm McKinson's cleverness with energy & aggression, because no-one is interested in putting up money to see that fight. And, we will never know if Conor Benn's power could either trouble the skills of McKinson or stall the momentum of Essuman because, as has become abundantly clear, Hearn won't put Conor Benn in with anyone that doesn't have 'lose' written into their contract.
