It never ceases to amaze me how serious boxing fans don't seem to grasp the main reason for prize-fighting: ENTERTAINMENT.

It pains and confuses Mayweather fans that fighters like Ali, Marciano, Tyson, Holyfield, RJJ, SRL, Hagler, Hearns are still talked about, yet a technical wizard like Mayweather isn't remembered as fondly, but the sad truth is that:

1. Casuals ( around 80% of people who watch boxing ) find technical fighters who go for point wins even when a KO is possible forgettable. Your average boxing viewer is not going to choose a Mayweather DVD career set, for example, over a Gatti DVD set.

2. Most view boxers in the HW division as the pinnacle of boxing. It's the premier league of Boxing.

Ali combined the best of both worlds. A HW who was technically gifted but also fierce and brave. He beat a young Foreman who in his old age KOED Moorer and took Holyfield the distance. He stopped arguably one of the most dangerous men to ever lace boxing gloves in Liston. Even in his most lacklustre fights, his movements, his jab and flair was still there to marvel at - I'd argue that while Mayweather was technically more able, he was drab and quite dull. There was an artistry and grace in Ali that no boxer has ever replicated, not even SRL.
