Boxers with short reaches, that weren't brawlers???

    Hey guys,

I'm an 18 year old amateur boxer.

I've been boxing for nearly two years and I am 6ft tall with a 73inch reach.

I'm English and white and most of the fighters I study and idolize are afro-americans and have very long reaches. All of them are master boxers and possess amazing speed and elusiveness such as Ali, Roy Jones, James Toney, Mayweather, Terry Norris, Tommy Hearns, Shane Mosely, Marvin Hagler, Lennox Lewis etc etc etc.

However, when I see their stats, I am disheartened, they all seem to have long reaches for their heights, is this what helps them be so effective with their styles?

    Mayweather is 5ft 8, 72 inch reach
    Mosely, 5ft 9, 74 inch reach
    Roy Jones, 5ft 11, 74 inch reach
    Tommy Hearns. 6ft 1, 88inch
Marvin Hagler, 5ft9, 74 inch reach
    Ali, 6ft 3, 82 inch reach
    Lennox Lewis, 6ft 5, 84 inch!

I have fast hands and can definatley **** but I love the outside boxing that these fighters are so adept at.

Fighting on the outside suits my temperment perfectly and I cannot see myself fighting any other way, but are my proportions going to be working against me? My reach is an inch shorter than Mosely's and I'm 3 inches taller than him!!!

Are there any fighters with average or below average reaches that are considered effective outside boxers and are reasonably slick? I'd like to study them as studying fighters such as Mayweather is probably not in my best interest.

    thanks a lot!

Most inside fighters are incorrectly labeled as brawlers, or "brawlers with skills," even though in-fighting is as much an art (a lost art) as out-fighting.

          With that said, James Toney.

oh ****, shoulda put that down. I fight at 152lbs, welterweight, had two fights, two wins so far but they were against stocky guys.

Though I have a reasonably long reach for my weight at the moment, most of the guys with the same reach and are significantly shorter. I also don't plan on fighting at 152lbs my whole life and am skinny atm. In the future I hope to move up through the weight classes.

Well, as long as you've got some speed in your movement and good foot work you should be ok. Good boxing IQ is another big advantage.

              Hamed had a 6 inch disadvantage in this fight and still managed to do well on the outside;

If you can **** as hard as you say you can, then combine that with some speed and you should be OK. Obviously you're going to need a better amount of speed then the average boxer, so you can slip and counter.

Just remember there is always one exception to the rule.

If you really like the boxing on the outside style, and want to know of a boxer that is short reached yet is not a brawler, try looking up some of Ivan Calderon's fights. His weight class is in the lightweight division, but he's a master boxer and has 35 undefeated fights, with only 6 KO's which means he's definitely outboxing his opponents.
