Comments Thread For: Martinez Meets Same Day Weight Requirement, Chocolatito Fight Moves Forward

SAN DIEGO - Julio Cesar Martinez is cleared to fight. The WBC flyweight titlist complied with the same-day weigh-in terms required to proceed with his scheduled 12-round junior bantamweight fight with legendary former four-division champion Roman 'Chocolatito' Gonzalez. Martinez checked in at 122.8 pounds in the presence of the California State Athletic Commission during Saturday's weight check, less than 24 hours after twice coming in over the limit during the official pre-fight weigh-in. "Estoy listo ("I'm ready")," a jubilant--and relieved--Martinez exclaimed to BoxingScene.com on his way to the scale, confident of hitting the mark.

Whew... Put some notes on Martinez late, but not over-confident in getting it right.

The Great Nash put down £550 on Roman (wins £400) covered with the draw (£30), so if Roman wins I take £370, if draw I break even. Strongly favour Roman, but many fancy Martinez too, so we'll see. Should be a good fight, I just see Roman as a level above based not the 3 -4 Martinez fights I have seen. Nash out.

I see Martinez taking it but chocolatito has proven me wrong before either way should be a barn burner.

If Martinez could have weighed as much as 126, I'm a little surprised he wasn't more than 122.

I think Chocolatito is on another level, indeed. What I fear for him, which is my main reason for betting on Martinez, is the "all-of-a-sudden-too-many-wars-cracked-my-resistance" syndrome.

If that does NOT happen, Martinez is in for a lesson.

The other issue is that I have only ever seen Gonzalez coming forward - he is the archetypal pressure technician. This plays right into Martinez' hands and I'm thinking that he's going to connect with at least some of those power punches - I can see Roman being on top and then getting taken out. The thing is Gonzalez could win this easily by outboxing Martinez, making him miss and countering all from a distance - but he won't do that.
