It started with Taylor/Catterall where you had an extremely competitive fight in one that many expected a blowout. Catterall from the opening bell was frustrating Taylor and was making him pay for being over anxious. Then when Taylor started to amp it up, Catterall bit down and got busy on the inside and even floored the champion! That was a great moment and then unfortunately the ref started to take over but at least he took points away from both fighters so it canceled out. I like most thought Catterall won but didn't think it was a blowout. Just hard to give Taylore more than 6 rounds in that fight. Likely lost by 3 points or at worst 1 point.
Ancajas vs Puma was a great action fight where the underdog was too much for the champion. The theme of the day was the underdogs having a lot of success against the favored opponents. The action started from round one and it carried on till the end. Props to Ancajas for continuing to try to win even though it seemed like he was overmatched and had nothing for Puma.
Russell vs Postol was a very good fight on paper and we got exactly that. Russell was the young highly touted contender but had not faced great competition so there were some questions he needed to answer. The one thing we know about Postol, he will answer those questions. The former champion was tough and still had a lot left in the tank and he was giving as well as he was receiving up until the half way point where Russell adjusted and took over. Postol showed some flaws that Russell had but I loved how Russell made settle adjustments to gain back the momentum. A young fighter who has been getting KOs in all his fights could panic when things aren't going his way but that wasn't the case with Russell. He kept the same intensity and eventually found what worked and used that to pull away late. I did not like the stoppage one bit though. That was embarrassing.
Colbert vs Garcia capped a good night of boxing with arguably the biggest surprise of the day. Colbert was facing a late replacement and many were just assuming he was going to make easy work out of Garcia but the opposite happened lol. Garcia was determined and flat out the better fighter. Colbert loves to talk smack about every fighter but when you do that, you better be willing to go out on your shield and he did not do that. Garcia took the fight out of him and humbled him to the point that Colbert was fine with taking the loss and just wanted to survive. Garcia looks to be a very good fighter and at least is a player at 130 but as for Colbert? Time to go to the back of the line and work his way to a title shot. I don't know if he is good enough to ever win a title but he needs to bounce back and show he has some DOG in him after yesterday's embarrassment.
Oh yeah, there was another big upset in Rigo losing earlier in the day! We need more days/nights of boxing that we received yesterday, makes the sport so much funner to watch.
