It's not often that you can uncover a "scoop" in a boxing promoter's press kit.
Press kits are for facts, figures, quotes--real or imaginary--and as much hype as can be fit in there.
But, lo and behold, the Top Rank propaganda kit for the Nov. 14 Manny Pacquiao-Miguel Cotto fight offers this gem in the final paragraph on Page 3:
"Cotto (34-1, 27 KOs from Caguas, Puerto Rico, WHO HAS NEVER LOST A FAIR FIGHT, has sold more tickets to Madison Square Garden in this milennium than any other fighter.
(I supplied the capital letters for dramatic effect).
Now, either somebody didn't proofread the press kit or Bob Arum could care less what his suspended by the California commission client and former world champion Antonio Margarito thinks.
If Cotto has never lost "a fair fight," ergo then Margarito absolutely cheated with his doctored handwraps when he stopped the Puerto Rican in Las Vegas.
Margocheato, as the Tijuana Tornado has become known, got caught redhanded--or should I say cementhanded--with illegal handwraps before the Jan. 24 Los Angeles bout he lost to Sugra Shane Mosley.
Maybe I'm "reading" too much this into but perhaps Arum and Top Rank don't care about Margarito because of persistent rumors that, when his suspension is lifted, he will begin fighting for Golden Boy Promotions.
The Nevada boxing commission has never initated any probe into the Cotto-Margarito bout and I donb't believe anyone has asked them to.
Maybe they should be reading the TR press kit.
