Comments Thread For: Thurman Wakes Up the Echoes, Eyes Return to Championship Spotlight

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - I'm a big fan of Keith Thurman. Always have been, in fact. Not only is he a Floridian - which gets him extra points now that it's been my home turf, too, for 15 years - but he's long one of the best and most consistently interesting interviews in the business.

"He’d vanished from The Ring’s divisional rankings at 147 as of late January. . . "

WEll a win overa career 140 fighte,r who was coming off a loss, shouldn't see that change much?

I have just saw the post fight press conference with Keith Thurman, and he speaks extremely well 'I like the enthusiasm'.

That is a solid win for Thurman, and if he wants to travel 'There are many big fights, even outside of title fights for him'.

I have been concerned that Thurman does not have the eye of the tiger anymore, that is the impression I have been getting from him for sometime. But I do see genuine enthusiasm in him after this fight 'I agree that he needs that spite back, that undertone of bad intention'.

Life outside of the ring affects fighters differently, all I am saying is that I saw a distinct change in Thurman even before the Manny Pacquiao fight.

Seeing as he only wants to fight for a belt next, how about Crawford or Spence vs Thurman. Ennis and Ortiz Jr are pretty much avoided at this stage.

This would be a very compelling article if I hadn't already knew who Keef "PART-TIME" Thurman was/is.

He's a knucklehead who ducked Spence and belittled him and now he's decided he needs money so he picked Mario Barrios and charged everyone $75 because "bubblegum ain't 5¢ no mo" AND he talks in the third person.

He is beyond annoying but maybe it's because I'm not from Fla.

Both those kids are gonna be avoided. They will both have to fight for a mando spot and hopefully they'll get that phone call one day. The way the sport is right now a title holder can go years without fighting their mandatory and it's ok. Just ask Leo Santa Cruz its going on 3 years since he fought as the 126 pound WBA champ

Run-Time is such a bore in the ring..constantly circles, retreats, holds on inside and-never fully engages and wont exchange until the last rd. ALWAYS content to go to the scorecards. Couldn’t even drop B-level average power previously Ko’d Barrios.

He looked OK in the comeback, but not remotely great. His legs are still there, he seemed relatively quick for about four rounds and his ring IQ is unquestionable. But his power is a thing of the past and his endurance — especially to the belly — looks sketchy. That isn’t rust, it’s decline.

Sadly, Keith is now auditioning to be a high-priced gatekeeper. He picked a bad time. Uncle Al’s run through all of the easy stock market money and more isn’t coming. There probably aren’t a lot more PPVs to mine, either, as people tighten their belts. Thurman had better cash out ASAP.

Boxing would be better if there was a rule you had to fight every 6 months or automatically drop 5 spots. And each stretch of 6 months of inactivity, drop another five spots in the rankings. Fights would get made, fans would happy, boxers would get their opportunities. Injured? too bad.

That's been the way for his last, say 5-6 fights, but you can't deny that up to then he was a KO artist. 32 fights , 24 KOs and stoppages. He may be declining, but maybe also his last few opponents have been much better than those before. Who knows. He makes a good fight anyway and is not backward about promoting the heck out of it, -a good asset.

He looked pretty good for a guy coming from injuries and a 30 month break.
