Calderon retains his belt (AP Photo/Andres Leighton)For the third straight time, Ivan Calderon escapes with his WBO light flyweight title due to a technical decision after sustaining a nasty cut from an accidental headbutt.

Calderon won a technical split-decision in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico last night against Filipino challenger Rodel Mayol. Judge Ruben Garcia and Julie Lederman scored it 68-65 for Calderon while judge Carlos Colon had it 65-68 for Mayol.

As expected, Calderon ran around the ring, throwing few and engaging less. Mayol was the aggressor throughout the fight living up to his promise that he would take the fight to Calderon and leave little doubt on judges minds. Calderon circled and danced all night however and had Mayol frustrated. I scored the bout 68-65 for Mayol giving round 3 and 6 to Calderon. The bout was stopped after the seventh round when a clash of heads caused a big cut on Calderon's forehead and the ring physician calling a stop to the fight.

It was an ugly and difficult fight to score. And in fights like this, it's hard to expect a decision going to a challenger in his opponent's backyard. What is frustrating however is that this is the third bout Calderon escaped a close fight with his belt despite his inability to continue. Surely he must keep a rabit's foot in his shorts for how fortunate he has been during the course of his last three fights. If Mayol was avoiding a similar fate as Paulie Malignaggi suffered in Houston a couple of weeks ago and did what he had to to keep the fight competitive, he definitely forgot to factor in the fragility of Calderon's forehead.

As a fight fan, I will probably never watch another Ivan Calderon fight again. If anything I just hope I don't see an "Ivan Calderon" fight on September 19 in Las Vegas. Calderon is definitely a great defensive boxer, I will give him that much, but I can also understand why Top Rank promoter Bob Arum refused to put him on a significant Pay-Per-View card.
