Comments Thread For: Fury-Whyte: Purse Bid Hearing Delayed By At Least One Week; Whyte To Appeal 80/20 Purse Split Ruling

I'm going off the WBC's own rules. I didn't make them up, the WBC did!
To wit:
2.16 Division of Proceeds in a Purse Offer. The net purse offer (after deduction of all sanction
fees payable to the WBC hereunder) shall be divided as follows:
(a) first, 10% of the total shall be set aside as a bonus for the winner of the contest,
then, of the remainder,
(b) 70% of the remaining 90% shall be for the champion and 30% of the remaining
90% shall be for the challenger in title bouts; and
(c) 50% of the remaining 90% to each contender in the case of vacant titles or
elimination bouts;
provided, however, that the WBC Board of Governors, may by a majority vote, authorize a
modification of the division of purse offer proceeds between boxers in a purse offer in
particular cases, such as consideration of outstanding marketing value of one of the boxers,
as the WBC shall determine in its sole discretion. The modification of the split of the
remainder shall be limited to 60-40% and 55-45%, except in the most exceptional
circumstances, in which the split may be modified to 50-50% at the WBC's sole discretion.
It seems pretty clear cut. In summary, the split is 70/30 unless they vote to amend it in favour of the challenger and there are only three available splits if they amend it, which are 60/40, 55/45 or 50/50. There is no allowance for 80/20 in their rules. Get it?Comment

I guess I'm a little slow because I'm still trying to understand why Povetkin wasn't the mandatory after he put Whyte to sleep. Still don't understand why there was a rematch for a title eliminator but as I said before I guess the wrong guy won. Why not give the entire purse to the winner and then you'll see who's full of ****.Comment

ARTICLE 8 – EXPRESS AGREEMENT OF ALL PARTIES All parties involved in reaching an agreement as to a WBC contest, shall sign an agreement stating their full acceptance and covenant to abide by the Constitution, Rules and Regulations, Championship Rules, and all rulings of the WBC.Last edited by paulf; 01-10-2022, 12:06 AM.Comment

This is being set up for team Fury to throw the belt in the bin. Whyte has a strong position with the mando and a big promoter with the wonga behind him. Normally Fury could just buy off his mando for a million quid or so. Team Fury know Hearn will bid at least 10m for the rights of the fight. I suspect they won't risk losing the bid so will dump the belt and fight Helenuis instead.
Hearn is in a very strong position here. He knows fully well he can make a fortune should Fury dump the belt. When Joshua loses to Usyk again, Then he can sell another PPV for a world title shot again for Joshua against Whyte. With 14 rematches in the contract of course.Last edited by Arthur Daley; 01-10-2022, 06:32 AM.Comment

One of the WBC's rules is that it's allowed to ignore any of it's current rules whenever and change things around however they like. Has been that way almost 20 years. The below allows them to ignore, enforce, or create new rules on the fly from fight to fight.
ARTICLE 8 – EXPRESS AGREEMENT OF ALL PARTIES All parties involved in reaching an agreement as to a WBC contest, shall sign an agreement stating their full acceptance and covenant to abide by the Constitution, Rules and Regulations, Championship Rules, and all rulings of the WBC.
As an aside, that same article states that "The WBC Constitution, Rules & Regulations, and Championship Rules, and the forms of Boxers and Promoters Agreements are available on the WBC website on the Internet" and as things stand the rule still says 70/30 or, in certain circumstances, may be more equally shared.
But my comment was primarily about how people's justifications were odd. People writing that the WBC were justified in suddenly implementing an 80/20 split because Whyte got knocked out by Povetkin, because of previous PED tests, because of this, that or the other. These may be valid reasons to not like Whyte, but they are totally irrelevant as to whether the WBC should be allowed to ignore its rules and jump to a different split.Last edited by Monty Fisto; 01-10-2022, 01:00 PM.Comment
