By Cliff Rold - Mikkel Kessler and Andre Ward entered Saturday night needing not only to win but to stay healthy doing it.
Mission accomplished on both sides.
Making his first start in almost a year, 30-year old WBA Super Middleweight titlist Mikkel Kessler (42-1, 32 KO) of Denmark scored a fourth-round stoppage of 33-year old Venezuelan Gusmyl Perdomo (16-3, 10 KO) at the MCH Messecenter in Herning, Denmark. It was Perdomo’s first knockout loss. Kessler’s win clears the way for him to enter the anticipated “Super Six” tournament, slated to being next month in the Super Middleweight division.
Kessler’s opening bout, versus the 2004 U.S. Olympic Light Heavyweight Gold Medalist Ward, is currently scheduled for November 21.
Kessler-Perdomo aired in the U.S. via tape delay as part of a split telecast. Kessler weighed in at 167 ½, Perdomo at 167, both men just beneath the division limit of 168 lbs. [details]
