Comments Thread For: Arum Feels Canelo Would Aim For Joe Smith First, Then Artur Beterbiev

Top Rank's CEO, Bob Arum, believes Mexican superstar Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez is considering a full run in the light heavyweight division. Canelo is current the undisputed world champion at super middleweight - a title he claimed back in November after knocking out Caleb Plant.

Looks like Canelo is going to have an easy 2022 if he fights the worst cruiser and light heavy champs.

It's not that long ago that Canelo stated that he wanted to fight 3 or 4 times in 2022.

If a star performs too often, the public gets enough of seeing him. That makes the money dry up. Boxing is a business, and they're angling to maximize cash flow. That won't happen if Canelo fights four tomato cans per year. Better to slow down a bit. It also won't happen if he gets gifted with too many phony (or at least highly questionable) wins against highly competitive fighters, with his team making the incredibly lame excuse that he's the "A" side fighter and thus deserves to win if he loses by only a little.

The biggest money fight out there for him is probably GGG-3. Even though GGG-2 went Canelo's way, I think he considers GGG too big a risk and wants to wait on GGG to age another year or two before trying that again. The first two bouts were brutal, and it appears to me that Canelo is not confident in facing him right now.

But I think Canelo should go ahead with it. GGG has begun showing the hesitancy that marks older fighters, allowing opponents to throw first in most encounters while waiting for an opportunity to counter. A fighter who is reluctant to throw fast and hard against Canelo will reliably lose, because Canelo is -- giving credit where it's due -- a highly skilled boxer, elusive, strong, athletic, incredibly quick, and with a chin like an engine block. I would expect him to win convincingly against the older GGG unless GGG changed his style back to his former days of relentless high-pressure stalk-and-smash with rib and eye-socket cracking force thrown time after time after time.

Older fighters tend not to fight that way, but Canelo appears concerned that he could, and he just might, and that would be very bad for his brand and his business. So the business case, for now, says to slow down and wait for the best money over the longest time. And that's what Canelo is doing.

I don't think canelo " fears" golovkin at all. I think a major factor is that it's obvious golovkin is holding out for that big retirement payday and canelo doesn't want to give him it. Canelos career progression at this point appears more to be collecting titles and going back to 160 looks unlikely. If golovkin wants to have any chance at that 3rd fight he probably needs to go up to 168 and beat someone like Benevidez. Beating Murata @ 160 isn't going to clinch it imo.

I think Golovkin has more money right now that he can ever spend. It must be bad to live knowing you won 2 fights and got robbed. Golovkin is too old now.

When did he say that? He fought 4 times in 12 months because he missed some fights in 2020 due to Covid and promoter issues.
After the Plant fight he said he needed a break so he probably wouldn’t fight again until May.
I doubt he fights more than twice next year. No other champion has been as active as he has, let alone the top guy in the sport.

Smith Jr. is a great fight for Canelo. He poses very little challenge but will help him get acclimated to the weight.

                    Canelo Haters logic

Beterbiev fights Smith Jr: “Great fight! One of the best fights at LHW to make right now!”

Canelo fights Smith Jr for WBO belt at 175: “Trash fight smh. Why is Canelo fighting this construction worker???”
