McWilliams Arroyo and Jose Pedraza won medals at the World Boxing Italy
Many got up early today and was well worth it. McWilliams Arroyo and Jose Pedraza filled with pride to the country where paths were crowned with gold and silver medals respectively in the World Amateur Boxing Championships held in Milan, Italy.
At 8:15 a.m. McWilliams started the fight to confront Tugstsogt Nyambayar, Mongolia. The Puerto Rican comfortably dominated the match and won the Mongolian 18-2.
A half hour later, Pedraza faced the Italian Domenico Valentino, who won 9-4.
In studies of family and WAPA TV personalities linked to local sport witnessed the event on the edge of the seat.
Both Arroyo and associates held Pedraza, Pedraza fell even though the 60 kilograms.
"He made tremendous fight. I know there were problems because the opponent was of the house. But whatever it was, and am very proud with the work he did, "said Pedraza's wife, Kristine Rivera.
For his part, David Bernier, president of the Puerto Rico Olympic Committee (PROC) also expressed its joy.
"What better way to start the Olympic cycle," said Bernier. "With what has happened in recent months in athletics, basketball and now at boxing, the country is convinced it's worth investing in sport," said PROC President after the fight and with reference to the medal silver won the National Basketball Team in the recently concluded Premundial Tournament held at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum, and Javier Culson who made history by achieving the silver medal in the event of 400-meter hurdles during the World Athletics made last August Berlin, Germany.
The last time two Puerto Ricans in a crowned World Amateur Boxing Championships was in 1974 when Wilfredo Gómez and José Luis fleece achieved gold and bronze medals
