Star On The Horizon Alert: Marc Castro

(NOTE: He's fighting on the undercard of Haney vs Diaz.)

I just noticed this guy, in a weird roundabout way. He fought this other amateur guy I was looking into and beat him. I had seen him fight before but never realized his pedigree. The man is a beast. Fights at super feather. He hasn't been a pro for too long. He's the 17 time amateur champion and two-time world champion amateur boxer, Marc Castro. Just a monster.

He only lost two of his amateur fights. He fought Keyshawn Davis and beat him both times. I don't know why he didn't fight at the Olympics. I don't get it. This guy is the real deal, and it just dawned on me because when I first saw him fight, I had no idea who he was really.

Check out three of his fights.

Marc Castro wants to fight like a unstoppable wrecking-ball, but he does not have the necessary defense to get inside without taking too much damage and the punching technique to breakdown top contenders, I like to see him compete with live-dogs.

For all his accomplishments in the amateur ranks, he looks horrible.

Castro said he had to withdraw because of an illness, at the fourth and final event of the 2020 USA Boxing Olympic Trials Qualifying Series in Oxnard during November, which hurt his chances of making the USA Boxing Qualification Team.

He said he also had opportunities to represent El Salvador, where his father is from, or Mexico, where his mother is from, at the Tokyo Olympics, but decided “it was best for me turn pro.”

Castro said he has an offer to train with Eddie Reynoso in San Diego, who also trains world champion boxer Canelo Alvarez.

Castro trained with Reynoso before the Olympic Trials Qualifying Series tournament in November.

Cool. Thanks man. I didn't know that.

I can definitely see why you say that. He put away his last opponent in the first round, the same guy that took Farmer the distance. But I get what you are saying here. It's just too early because he hasn't had to defend, for the most part. I have no doubt that his defense is superb because he wouldn't be so decorated as an amateur. His constant level changing, off rhythm movement look fantastic to me.

We shall see. But it won't be this next fight because his opponent, Solis, falls short every time he takes a step up. Solis' last three fights have ended in near unanimous loses (one ended as a no contest) or TKO. If he can blast him out of there by the second round, I think we are seeing something special. But like you said, we need to see him against someone with a better skill set.
