Comments Thread For: Canelo-Plant Showtime PPV Show On Track To Reach 800,000 Buys

Canelo Alvarez's return to boxing's traditional pay-per-view platform Saturday night was a bigger success than anticipated. BoxingScene.com has learned that the total buy rate for the Showtime Pay-Per-View event headlined by Alvarez's 11th-round knockout of Caleb Plant is on track to reach 800,000. That total includes only domestic buys in the United States through cable and satellite operators, as well as digital sales that have consistently accounted for an increasing number of buys in 2021.

With a gate that neared 20M and 800,000 or so buys? The fight was a massive success! Canelo is going to easily clear 45M for the fight, and likely will get to close to 50M. Good for him!

I remember so many people thinking the UFC fight taking place was going to kill the sales of this event lol. The live gate was TWICE as much as the UFC gate and this did 800k buys. Shows the market for Canelo and boxing does not get impacted much with the UFC market.

That’s a damn good number for a non May Or September date. UFC had a PPV card as well being pushed hard by ESPN. Plant isn’t a big name to casuals.
Makes me think a Charlo fight in May could push a million plus buys.

Yeah but Floyd is Floyd and there's only one of those.

These are great numbers for Canelo against an opponent with this level of name recognition during current economic times.

With better promotion they should be able to surpass these numbers on the traditional May 5 holiday weekend next year.

Yep, Logan Paul is a huge draw. He has over 23 million subscribers on YouTube. It is hard for me to wrap my head around how popular some of these YouTube, Tick Tock, and other social media types are. You have to give Floyd Mayweather lots of credit for recognizing that and "fighting" these guys who are uber-popular around the world.
