Has Alvarez Surpassed His Mentor Oscar De La Hoya

Two great fighters that were groomed early on to become the PPV king

both have a handful of fights with decisions that could go either way

neither known for dominating in their big fights

Oscar was great. He really was. I remember watching the Tito Trinidad fight and screaming at my TV (since I was a big Oscar fan) as De la Hoya gave the fight away. It made no sense to me then and makes no sense to me now. That was a fight he should have won, and he was never great afterwards. He was still darn good, but it wasn't the same. It was fun to later watch him bust up Mayorga, though. Oscar took on all comers with mixed success. Canelo is currently taking on all comers with a very high degree of success. And, it looks like the cinnamon train is going to keep on rolling. In the ring, I say yes, Canelo has very much surpassed the Golden Boy. In terms of mass appeal transcending boxing, perhaps not.

      - -Oscar surpassed Floydy when he made him publically breakdown in the advance of their rematch as did Manny who picked up that fight on short notice having to jump two divisions.
