  • Comments Thread For: Sergey Lipinets To Move Back Down To Junior Welterweight, Eyes January Ring Return

Sergey Lipinets is ready to give junior welterweight another try. The former titlist is preparing to drop back down in weight following a two-year foray in the welterweight division, with hopes of his return to the 140-pound division to come next January. Lipinets--who briefly held the IBF junior welterweight crown--never moved up to welterweight out of physical necessity more than means to remain active. With more opportunities now opening back up in his old division, it felt like time to return to his optimal weight.

Smart move! Good fighter, should do well @ 140. Speaking of which, when are we getting Matias vs. Ponce?

his handlers always throw him in some tough fights, dont expect anything different even after the KO loss, hell be fed to Matias, Prograis or Ergashev

I was under the impression it was an elimination tournament. However when Ritson fought Ponce, it was being referred to as a final eliminator. So I've been confused as to wether that is the case or not, and I'm sure Ponce is under the impression that he is now the mandatory. And I'm starting to believe that also as I'm sure the IBF would have ordered a final eliminator by now if there was going to be one. So maybe reports of an elimination tournament were inaccurate. I'd like to see Matias vs Ponce as that was what I was originally looking forward to.

Ive seen you saying this before. What is his situation exactly? I think I read something about a dispute with Dimitry Salita. Does this have something to do with his inactivity?

Yes indeed! Say he fought in Russia without Salita's blessing! Not a good look!

It was a tournament! If Matias can't get Ponce, I would pay to see him fight Prograis! Browny is like a better version of Wilder! He hit different! Browny is what Wilder would be, if he had an inside game! Lol!

So why is he not fighting in the US? And why is Salita not letting him fight the odd fight in Russia either if Ergashev still lives out there? Is there bad blood between them? I've not heard what the problem is.

Yeah I was sure it was a tournament also. I remember being pleased about that and thinking that, I wished the other organizations done this. But I think something must have changed as Ponce's fight was billed as a final eliminator, and in interviews afterwards he was being asked how he felt about being mandatory. I recall Matias beating Dadashev in an eliminator and he thought that he became mandatory, but he didn't as khongsong won an eliminator for the no1 position and he became it instead. But I don't know if that was called as a tournament or not. The IBF have been a bit confusing in these matters.
