    Interview With Ivan Calderon

INTERVIEW WITH IVAN "IRON BOY" CALDERON BEFORE HIS UPCOMING FIGHT WITH RODEL MAYOL

    Date: 9/8/2009

This Saturday 12 of September, junior flyweight champion Iván “Iron Boy” Calderón (32-0-1-6 KOs) will be defending his title for the fourth before the dangerous Rodel “Batang Mandaue” Mayol (25-3-1-19 KOs) of the Philippines.

This will be the second time that both fighters will be facing off agaisnt each other. The first fight took place this past 13th of June from the Madison Square Garden in New York when the Puertorican was barely able to retain his title via a technical draw after the fight was the stopped in the fourth round due to a cut in the head of champion.

How ready is Ivan this time around? What type of fight will he employee this saturday? This and other questions are answered by Calderon himself in this interview.

I would like to start out by asking you about your first fight with Rodel Mayol. I was there in New York present for this fight and what I was able to see is that in the first few rounds your defense was working as it usually is, but you were having difficulties mounting any sort of offense, or counter punching. Tell us a little about those first few rounds and how you felt in the ring.

Well those first few rounds where a little different for me in terms of my style, speed and movements. That’s why my counter punching became complicated. Not to mention that he was not a fighter that came to look for me. He was waiting for me to look for him so the tone of the fight changed a bit because of that. But I can’t take anything away from him, because he was smarter than the other fighters I have faced and got me into a fight that is not my style. I went there looking to show my strength and stand there and show that I am a brawler, which is not my fight. That’s what was different in those first few rounds.

What do you need to do different this time around and what did you learn from the first fight?

Well what I have to do is move and show my speed. I can’t change much from what I normally do because you can’t change who you are over night. I have to return to my winning style, to hit and not be hit. Make the type of fight I fought against Hugo Cazares, Nelson Dieppa and all those other opponents of high caliber that I fought in the past.

This is the second time in a row that you had a fight stopped due to cuts in the head. How well have you recovered from this injury and are there any concerns it could affect you again in this fight?

Well, I have recovered well. There’s always a little mark and bump that’s left behind, but it’s healed well. There is always a small concern going into any fight that a cut can reopen and you can be down in the score cards. That’s why I always try to win the first few rounds, in case something like this were to happen. And I have to mention that the nasty cut I received during the Hugo Cazares fight healed well. We weren’t cut there when we fought Mayol, it was somewhere else. So you never know if a cut can occur, maybe not there but somewhere else. We’ve done a good job with the cuts, but with a hard clash of heads any cut can occur. That’s just part of boxing.

Ivan obviously your focus needs to be on this fight, but I would like to ask you what are your plans for after this fight? There have been talks of a fight between you and Brian Viloria, is that the fight you would like to have if you’re victorious over Mayol? How much longer would you like to remain in boxing?

My goal has always been to fight the best. I never ducked the best, they ducked me. Brian Viloria was the fighter we wanted to face right now, but he decided to take another fight and that’s why were facing Mayol again. But after this fight if we come away with the win I would like to face him at the end of the year or at the beginning of 2010. And then look for Sosa (Edgar Sosa WBC champion) if he doesn’t want to fight me then I would look to go up one more time and then retire.

    A message for the fans?

Well, I hope their there to see the same Ivan of old, displaying good boxing skills and with the help of God coming away with the win. My mind is focused on winning and I hope all my fans will support me, since this time the Pay Per View will be shown in the United States and not just Puerto Rico.
