After the two 'mega fights' between Mayweather-Marquez & Pacquiao-Cotto and presumably when these fighters retire, I'm wondering if there are any fighters that can bring be a 'big' draw for the fans and elevate the sport...Golden Boy thought they had it with Victor Ortiz, but that proved to be an 'after-thought' witnessing his Maidana stoppage...Juan Manuel Lopez was being hyped as a more charismatic version of Cotto but is considered a 'ducker' at the moment (come on...fighting Oliver Lontchi instead of a unification bout with Caballero?)...these were the main two that came to my mind, but just don't have that 'draw' factor...
At the moment you have Mayweather who is a big draw for fans that have sheer hope that he will lose for the first time (the ultimate 'bad guy' right now in the sport, ala Hamed, but with boxing skills & high IQ - yeah, that was a cheap shot at Hamed, thanks MAB) or attracts fans of the sweet science of a defensive minded guru....Marquez brings Mexico because he is the last Mexican hope for now until JCC Jr. fights somone of substance or worth or just by name recognition (but papa JCC won't put him in to any war, don't blame him, that's a father protecting his most prized commodity)...Pac brings the Philippines & has an actual following in Mexico after his wins over their legends and the United States (thanks to Nike propaganda & a growing Filipino community on the West Coast) and Cotto brings all of Puerto Rico behind him...there are no other draws in the sport left when these guys exit...
Sad to say that when these four exit, I don't see anyone anyone stepping in...Or becoming that "cash-cow" attraction!
The scenario I believe will play out is that this is Mayweather's last fight win or lose...If he wins, he will price himself out of a Pac fight. If Cotto wins, Mayweather may think about taking a fight with Cotto, because if Cotto wins, no question he will be damaged goods! In all honesty, Money wants nothing to do with Sugar Shane because I swear, whoever goes into the ring with Sugar Shane, is dead....Dude is HUNGRY! That overhand right may put someone through the ring! Pac has 2 megafights & 1 farewell fight (possibly staged in the Philippines) left in him before he goes into politics (which is a sad fact and could lead to his financial demise with the 'goons' he has in his entourage)...Marquez retires if he loses to Mayweather or has 1 more megafight (with Pac) if he wins to complete the trilogy...Cotto retires if he loses and sustains a beating or if he wins has 1 more megafight with Mosley (possibly even Mayweather since he will be damaged goods win or lose after Pac) or a farewell fight in PR...
All I know is I'm looking forward to both megafights...really would love to see a fighter force Mayweather to go to war, and I think JMM could possibly do that...For God sake, JMM drinks piss... ANYTHING is possible! WAR JMM (cuz I'm selfish and I want to see a third fight with him and Pac at Jr. WW to settle the score!) Out of curiousity, has there been any trilogy between two fighters that crossed over three weight classes because imagine a trilogy between Pac and Marquez would cross featherweight, Super featherweight, and Jr. WW? and of course, the possible FOTY, Cotto-Pac...whatever happens, this will be in the words of Jim Lampley - - "a hellacious war"...and both men will not be the same after this fight...WAR Pac! Pac-Marquez trilogy would be a great way to end on a high note (atleast for now) the Filipino-Mexican boxing rivalry...
Any thoughts?
