Marvin Sonsona at 19 became one of the youngest Filipinos to bag a world title when he stunned his favored 37-year-old opponent on Saturday.

He flew back home dawn on Monday at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia) and, like his idol Manny Pacquiao, the world pound-for-pound king, he is now contemplating on his next fight on November 21.

Sonsona wouldn’t know this early who his next opponent would be, but what is definite is that he would again fight at the Casino Roma in Ontario, Canada, the same venue where he outclassed Puerto Rican Jose Lopez in a 12-round technial knockout win.

His manager, Sammy Gelioani, said even he could not say who his ward would fight next. “There are no specific names yet, although they would belong to the top 10 in his class,” he said.

Pacquiao was 13 days short of his 20th birthday when he snatched the World Boxing Council flyweight title on December 4, 1998. Sonsona, also from General Santos where Pacquiao hails, said he has no secret whatsoever about his winning formula, except that he trained hard for the fight under the watchful eyes of his uncle Boy Sonsona, Jun Argabio and Nonito Donaire Sr.

He narrated he started boxing at seven and turned pro at 17. “Boksingero ang papa ko [Ben Samson or Jovencio Sonsona in real life],” said Sonsona, who is undefeated in 14 fights with 12 knockouts.

Although he has his own style, Sonsona said he has Gerry Peńalosa, Pacquiao and International Boxing Federation flyweight king Brian Viloria as his models.

Sonsona, however, returned home without the World Boxing Organization super-flyweight belt he snatched from Lopez. The promoters of the fight, Sonsona said, promised to send him the belt later.

MORE often than not, nicknames truly are apt descriptions of who the person really is. And marvelous is just perfect for Sonsona.

The circumstances that surround his win makes Sonsona extraordinary. Sonsona was not only too young in chronological age but he lacked enough professional fights for people to notice his prowess.

Coming into his championship fight after only 13 professional bouts, Sonsona was told to be cautious. However, his handlers felt that because 12 of his 13 victories came via technical knockout, the power in their ward’s mitts was enough to negate his inexperience.

Sonsona also has never fought more than five rounds, which led to concerns about his readiness to go the full 12. Lopez has time and again proven he can go a full 12 with a lot to spare. But Sonsona’s youth negated that disadvantage with stamina.
