he lived in michigan the first 10 years of his life then he moved to new york, safe to say he became a great boxer in new york...if he wants to claim ray robinson then he cant claim joe louis because he grew up in alabama...

The Brown Bomber was born in Alabama yes but he lived most of his life in Detroit. I have no real beef with New York claiming Ray Robinson, but I think it can go either way.
The fact remains that Michigan and New York both have turned out tons of quality prize fighters. -

What do we go by? Birthplace? Where you were raised? Where you started your career?
Robinson was born in the South, spent some of his childhood in the "Black Bottom" area of Detroit, then moved to New York.
Louis was born in Alabama and then moved up Detroit at age 12.
Hearns was born in Tennessee but grew up in Detroit.Comment

it depends on what angle you're going for with the city repping thing ya'll are talking about. If you are bragging about the 'superior genetics' of a particular region, then obviously it's completely frivolous what area the boxer "moved to" after they were born because only their inherent birth place is important so in that regard Sugar Ray Robinson was BORN in Georgia and thus can represent Georgian "stock" and genetics as responsible for his skill.
If ya'll are talking about the ENVIRONMENTAL significance in a boxer's background, then obviously it's more important which CITY was the one where the boxer spent most of their earliest and most formative training, in this case New York for instance can probably claim Sugar Ray as teaching him the most as someone else already mentioned. So basically it's all about what angle you're examining this view point from.Comment
