Comments Thread For: Will The WBA Sustain Change?

By Cliff Rold - It's a good start. Wednesday, as reported at BoxingScene by Jake Donovan, the World Boxing Association did more than talk about changing their chaotic title picture. They've said they would address the issue in the past and nothing happened. This time, something did. The WBA took a concrete step, withdrawing recognition of all their interim titlists.

The real question is was there harm with PBC and the WBA benefitting from their scheme to provide Haymon’s networks “championship” fights.

think about the brand name Premier Boxing Champions. The networks are under the impression in signing a deal with Haymon in which they would assume he’s providing Championship fights. Do network executives question “Champion” usage in boxing?

Boxingscene and other sites have for the past 3 years reported weird occurrences with the WBA… from Rigo, LSC, Davis, Morrell… just all suspect labeling for fights under the PBC umbrella.

    where is Hauser?!

They should get rid of corrupt Mendoza first.
Looks like he plans to keep regular crap. Would be too damaging for PBC if he gets rid of them or orders them to consolidate with supers, which is exactly how it should be. Regulars were supposed to be mandos to supers
(Ex) Interims have no place in this and should be ignored.

Have the "Gold" fight the "Interims" for the #1 spot. Have the "Regulars" fight the "Supers" and the WBA should have 1 Champion per division within a year! Make It Happen!

Didnt the WBC create a "Franchise Title" for Canelo? As a matter of fact isn't Canelo and Teo the only 2 with that title? It's kinda hard to point out 1 org and promotional company's downfalls without mentioning that all of them are full of crap.

A Franchise for Canelo or Loma has nothing to do with providing a TV network a Championship fight. Lol. Canelo doesn’t need to be labeled a “Champ” for TV ratings. Brush up on what was said

Your absolutely correct and I stand corrected. The list of fighters you named also have a great following without a champion label too with the exception of possibly Rigo. My point is it's not just 1 promotional company or 1 network that tries to spin something out of nothing. All of them are equally guilty of putting labels on fighters to try and squeeze every last penny they can and all of them are guilty of blocking fights we as fans deserve to see. As fans instead of trying to choose sides with a particular company or network WE should stand united and demand the fights we want and to hell with a "LABEL" real fans dont care about the trinkets we just enjoy the fights.

Looks like they are taking it serious. I will say "YES" to be positive.

Well, it looks like Cliff Rold has it right. But the WBA, the worst abuser of fake belts, did not write the article. Time will tell if these orgs will clean themselves up. Without some kind of push back, the promoters, orgs and elite boxers tend to side with multi belts because now they can bill the fights as a championship and fighters get a belt. Unfortunately, a watered down belt that usually gets protected in some way for financial reasons. But the value of these lesser belts is tarnished. It'll take effort and some fair play to offset a drift back to these current ways. Boxing fans and boxers both win when there is integrity back in the sport. Bad ring decisions aside. But elimination of these fringe belts is definitely a start. Great article, Cliff.
