  • Comments Thread For: Joey Spencer Looking For 'Big Year' In 2022, To Step Up Competition For Fight In Michigan

NEWARK, New Jersey - Joey Spencer needed rounds last Saturday night. The unbeaten junior middleweight prospect had logged less than five full rounds since January 2020 before he entered the ring to face James Martin in an eight-round fight FOX televised from Prudential Center. The 21-year-old Spencer also had surgery on his right hand four months ago, in which he had two pins inserted into it.

I like Joey, think he has a decent ceiling. However, PBC is the wrong promotional company for him. Although, they have provided Joey with a good amount of TV dates, their promotion towards him has been abysmal to say the least. Spencer is a handsome kid w/t legit power and is Mexican-American from his mother side. Top Rank or Golden Boy would of made this kid a star by now similar to Ryan Garcia but PBC keeps pushing him as this Great White Hope when they should be playing up his Mexican ancestry. Mexican American makes up the biggest fan base in boxing is them PBC should be selling this kid to.

so you want him to portray himself as something that he doesn’t seem to identify with? Unlike Ryan Garcia who’s pandering to the Mexican American fan base despite the fact that he doesn’t know a lick of Spanish and his parents don’t even speak Spanish, maybe Spencer doesn’t want to portray himself to be someone who identifies with Mexican culture when he doesn’t. Not everyone is willing to play the role of a fraud.

Funny, Joey has never downplayed his Mexican Heritage. In fact, that’s how he’s been identified since his amateur days in Michigan. Is not since Spencer signed w/t PBC that they tried to proclaim him the next Great White Hope.

But the 15-year-old Mexican-American is trying to put Linden, Michigan, on the map by punching his way up the amateur ranks

he says nothing about being Mexican American in that article and says his favorite fighter was Cotto and wants to put linden Michigan on the map. Doesn’t look like she’s ever repped it and he shouldn’t be forced to if he doesn’t care to.

Joey doesn’t say anything about being a redneck either but as you can read he’s been identified as a Mexican American long before his pro debut. Again, I’m talking about promotion here PBC would be wise to play up Joey’s Mexican heritage if they want to see his star grow b/c obviously declaring him the Great White Hope has done nothing for his popularity.

so being white is automatically synonymous with being a red neck? Lmaooo. He’s literally saying he wants to rep where he was born in that article, not Mexico. Not everyone with a drop of Mexican blood feels the need to act like they’re actually connected to the culture.

Bruh, Joey’s father Jason admits they come from rednecks, LOL. Just like Joey’s mom is proud of her Mexican roots. Like it or not Joey is Mexican American that’s a fact.

The Spencers, as Jason describes them, were rednecks originally from Virginia and moved to Michigan for the booming auto industry in the 1950s and 60s, and Joey’s mother embraces her Mexican heritage.

He’s being promoted fine, he’s a regular on FOX and getting more exposure to the American sports fan than if he were on triller or dayzin. I hat he needs to do most of all is win and step up competition and keep winning and do it impressively. By the way, Mexican isn’t a race it’s a nationality. Canelo is Mexican and white as snow. Guaranteed Spencer’s birth certificate says white regardless of petty tribalism
