'THE LAST NIGHT OF ARTURO GATTI'
The last night of Arturo Gatti started well, but early in the night, following an argument, everything collapsed. To reconstruct the events, the Journal spoke with a dozen witnesses who met or saw the couple in the small village of Porto de Galinhas in the evening of July 10. The Journal has also consulted the witness statements contained in the report of the civilian police.
At the edge of the spectacular beaches of Brazil Porto de Galinhas, a quaint seaside town south of Recife, Arturo Gatti and Amanda Rodrigues had rented for a month a two-story condominium located in the upscale resort-Dorisol Ancorar Resort.
The couple and their son Arturo Junior came together in complex Dorisol-Ancorar in the day Friday, July 10.
"They had booked by phone and prepaid. When I met them, they seem to me quite happy, no problems. They told me they had a honeymoon," says Cristina Esperidião, who handles the rental of condominiums for the firm Ancorar (the complex is divided into two, with hotel rooms a side and condominiums on the other).
Arturo, Amanda and Jrt hen headed by taxi to the tourist resort of Porto de Galinhas, located a few kilometers from the hotel.
Several witnesses saw them walking together, pushing a stroller in Junior and visiting shops. "They were at the show, said Andre Mercier. "She came for a waxing, and himself, he sat here waiting for the baby, who was cute as hell. They were quiet people, normal, smiling. They looked like a normal couple in love, happy holidays."

Here is the story of the eventful night that preceded the death of the boxer.

After settling into their condo at Ancorar and have just visited the village, Arturo Gatti and Amanda Rodrigues went on the street where there are restaurants and shops of Porto de Galinhas, which leads to the beach. At the end of the street, they stopped about 9.00pm in a restaurant with a terrace overlooking the beach. They ate pizza.
Witnesses said the couple had ordered two large pizzas, one for themselves and another for a small group of street children they had invited to the table beside them.
They have ordered two bottles of wine.

Between midnight and 1.00am in the morning, Arturo, Amanda and their baby (who sleeps in a stroller) leave the restaurant and walk to the mall to where the taxi had left.
Along the way, seeing that restaurants were preparing to close their doors, Arturo asks his wife to stop at another small restaurant for a beer. The server installs on a table on the street outside the restaurant, since it closes. They each drink a beer. This is where things started to deterioate between the couple.
At one point, Arturo, upset, allegedly threw a beer on the floor. Amanda then allegedly said: "You never change ..."
Arturo informed Amanda that he wants to go to the disco in the village, Santeria, which is slightly behind the center.
But Amanda refused and an argument breaks out in the street.
Several witnesses were heard, without understanding them - as they shouted in English.
"I told him that we should return to the hotel because it was late and we had the baby," says Amanda Rodrigues. It would also refused to let him go alone at the bar. Witnesses whom the Journal was talking recall having heard the couple screaming.
"They fought very hard and they spoke English.
It happens often, but when I saw their photos in newspapers, I have recognized, "
says Luiza, an employee of a ***elry business street Esperança.

Several witnesses tell of seeing Gatti pushing his wife "like...'to move it' " and shouting phrases "in English or Italian". Since the beginning, Amanda has maintained that her husband had only "surge" and she fell to the ground. But at least one direct witness of the fight in the Journal argued that she had been violently pushed and beaten by Gatti.
"I saw the fight, push and she fell and he pulled her by the hair," says George Soares da Silva, answering to the hostel Poussada Farol do Porto. After Amanda had fled on foot to escape Arturo, the 52 year old man, stocky but sturdy enough, then went to Gatti for him to account. The former boxer came to install the baby in a taxi, and was preparing to go away, visibly upset. "I simply asked what had happened and he hit me in the face once or twice. I lost consciousness. When I came back to me, I got up and went back to the hostel. I was bleeding and my nose was broken, " he told the Journal.

Asked several times about this in the Journal, Amanda Rodrigues finally admitted, in tears, she downplayed the violence she was subjected to "people do not keep a bad picture of Arturo. I've told anyone that he had beaten. It was so sweet and nice most of the time. Only when he drank he became violent towards me, " she said. According to police, who say they have interviewed and obtained statements of sixty witnesses (including several tourists), the fight between Arturo and the porter has attracted several curious, who, threatening, wanted the boxer's face. The taxi driver, startled, then started his car to alert police in a police station a little further down the same path. According Alberes Paulo, the police chief civil Ipojuca, who led the investigation, then, seeing that Gatti was alone and without her baby and the hostile crowd it would take to him, pushing him and throwing stones found ground. The Journal has found that here the floor is under renovation and we can easily find enough boulders. The average taxi, Gatti took refuge there and then returned to the apartment, where he tried in vain Amanda.

The hotel staff who saw him described him as "angry", "sorry". "He smelled of alcohol, but he was not drunk at the point of staggering," said Luciano, an employee of the reception of the hotel complex, which saw Gatti arrived at the hotel with her baby in her arms. Arturo decides to return to Porto de Galinhas, but he must take another taxi because the driver who took him to the apartment complex refuses to resume. Arrived in Porto de Galinhas, Gatti left the baby in the taxi and enter into gale in the bar Santeria. There, in the police report, witnesses describe him as "the Incredible Hulk," hustling customers, pushing the chairs to clear a path and seeking his wife. Again, it would be fought with Brazilians.Finding Amanda is not there, it goes back into the taxi - when the baby cries, according to the testimony of the driver - and returned to the hotel.

When they arrive at the hotel, Amanda is here and waiting near the car taxi which took her back. She asks Arturo to pay the driver.
The couple had two magnetic cards. Arturo was one and the other was placed permanently in a device to operate the electricity in the apartment. Gatti, who carries the baby still cries, pays the taxi and the couple returned together visibly angry at the hotel.
It is then between 2 am and 2.30 am. Once inside, according to Amanda Rodrigues, Arturo realizes she is hurt and asks: "It was I who did it?" When she replied in the affirmative, he asked him if everything was now finished between them. She said "yes" before taking the baby and get into the master bedroom upstairs.

"I locked the door. This is the last time I talked to him"

equaliser, where you wrote...."They each drink a beer. This is where things started to deterioate between the couple.

here's a million dollar question that i have yet to see answered.....what caused the deterioation? what in essence, caused the main fight?

    also in another paragraph...

"After Amanda had fled on foot to escape Arturo, the 52 year old man, stocky but sturdy enough, then went to Gatti for him to account. The former boxer came to install the baby in a taxi, and was preparing to go away, visibly upset. "I simply asked what had happened and he hit me in the face once or twice. I lost consciousness."

don't you wonder what really happened between mr 52 year old stocky man and arturo? i mean, don't you wonder what would casue a professional boxer, who probably well knows that the use of his hands in violence is illegal, make him commit an act like that? one thing i am not sure of and would be interested in researching is if Arturo has had any past related drunken bar fights? might there be a history of this sort of behavior?

EQ, come on man, lead me in the right direction...where should i continue to research, so i can come up with your same ideaology? i really really, want to know why is it that you are fixated on arturo commiting suicide???

why is it so hard for you to believe that amanda might have staged the entire plot to paint suicide? after all, it is Amanda that made the intial comment....."we were trying to work things out by coming here for a second honeymoon". my opinion, is that is a physicological statement she made to further sway the general public viewpoint as to why they were there. Apparently, Arturo was extemely close to his sister, why wouldn't Amanda excuse him from attending his own sister's wedding? heck i am sure she was invited also...what could have prevented her from taking a day or two from their holiday in brazil to attend her sister-in-law's wedding???? visa issues??? doubt it...cause she did her recent stint in Canada, then went down to the states...ironically to meet up with Joe Gatti

i knew i read this somewhere...

"We are not going to let this go," Lynch said. "We are hoping that the Canadien government will get involved. ... There is a lot of evidence this was preplanned. ... They were traveling in Europe and she went ahead to Brazil. Arturo was headed back to New Jersey for his sister's wedding and to get his (10-month-old) son and then (Rodrigues) says 'No, no, no. Come down here right now.' "

Equaliser, what do you mean by winding me up now? Does that mean you have an actual response to airplane's question? Or are you going to make some excuse for Amanda...? Personally I agree with Airplane on many things he pointed out, If Amanda has Visa's issues why is it that she's in the states? I'm sure Gatti's sister would have loved to have Amanda and Arturo jr at her wedding? and another thing....It has been mentioned so many times that Gatti loved his sister.....so why would he have committed suicide ON THE SAME DAY? And much like Lynch said on ESPN 60, would someone actually strip down to their underwear, kid up stairs and everything.....just to commit suicide....

Maybe, cos of all the stuff I posted about the case (just go back and re-read every thread/post I did...all your answers are contained in those) and the fact that 2nd autopsy hasn't come up with anything, and never will...this investigation has, quite rightly so, gone utterly cold.
                    It's over.

The only loose-ends that need to be tied up are the things that matter now to each party (The Gattis / Rodrigues) now: the money and who-gets-what.

Move along, airplane....nothing more for you here now...
