Vitali Klitschko: "Lennox Lewis Promised Me a Fight"

I remember his loss to McCall was not to do with his weight and with Rahman altitude and acting in a film played a part, but in this fight he looked out of sorts and he had been out of the ring for a year (that's what the warm up was originally for).

if Vitali hadn't damaged his shoulder against Byrd this fight could have happened at least year or 2 earlier. Frank Maloney was at ringside for that and was gutted over the result.

I wanted a rematch but you can't blame Lewis, look at it from his view, either go out on top with a win or possibly go out on your back without the title, and take alot of punishment, lewis had a cut over his nose and swelling around his eyes and face. A rematch would of meant more of the same or worse. He turned down the 20 mill because he didn't need it, he already made millions. But i hope Vitali can walk away when he knows his skills are diminishing.

Really, who else is out there for the Klits to talk about that's really a threat? Chirs A? Haye? not nobody. Why not talk about the guy that gave his word on a rematch? Its understandable.

At the end of the day Lewis is fat and way out of shape. He don't want none. But that won't stop a fighter from bringing up a rematch.......

Vitali was clearly winning the fight 4-2 on all 3 scorecards. Lewis was badly hurt and was staggering around the ring like a drunk, he barely survived the 2nd round, was getting outlanded and was hurt again later in the fight.

Lewis was exhausted and worn down from the accumulation of punches, he collapsed onto his stool at the end of the 6th round, Vitali was the fresher of the two, he was a man on a mission that night and would've KO'd Lewis if the fight had continued.

All 20,000 fans at Staples Center cheered for Vitali and boo'd Lewis after the fight. Vitali was the real winner of that fight, he battered Lewis into retirement.

Lewis promised Vitali a rematch if he could beat Kirk Johnson.

Vitali destroyed Johnson in 2...The scared Lewis retired like a coward shortly after that fight.

Lewis turned down 25 million dollars for a rematch and retired like a coward because he knew Vitali would destroy him and tarnish his legacy.

You're basically right in what you said, but with just one (or two)correction(s).

Lewis didn't promise Klitschko a return if he beat Johnson. Johnson was Lewis's original opponent, and a couple of weeks before the fight, cried off injured. Klitschko was fighting on the undercard, and after Lewis held up the promoters for a good deal more money
(not sure how much) he agreed to take Klitschko as a substitute.

After the fight, which was stopped by the doctor on the erroneous notion that Klitschko "couldn't see", although the eyeBROW had been under control for nearly 3 rounds
(and Klitschko could see perfectly) Lewis, in the ring, promised a rematch. It was supposed to take place on-I think_ December 10th (someone out there will know the exact date) but Lewis kept stalling and stalling. Eventually he said that he was worried that Klitschko's eye would not be healed (after SIX months) and not only would he do Klitschko permanent damage, but the fans would be cheated out of a good fight because Klitscko's "eye" would cause an early stoppage.

So he insisted that Klitschko travel to London to be examined by his-Lewis's- eye specialist.

Klitschko had had a top cosmetic surgeon to repair his eyebrow, and, as was obvious on TV after 10 days, the injury could not even be noticed. He appeared on TV especially so that he could show the public that his eyebrow was NOT any kind of handicap to him.

Klitschko went to London, was examined, was "passed" but Lewis kept messing him around.

Therefore Klitschko made a match in December with Lewis's original opponent Kirk Johnson, and massacred him in les than 2 rounds.

When Lewis saw this, we can only speculate -with great confidence- that Lewis knew that Klitscko would destroy him, and after a lot of nonsense finally announced his retirement in the April of the next year. He never had ANY intention of fighting Klitscko again, realising how lucky he'd been that the dumbo doctor had stopped the fight with an incorrect assumption that Klitschko's eyelid was out of control and he couldn't open that eye. All nonsense of course but, the fact was he made an incorrect diagnosis, and stuck to it, giving, I believe one or two more, different -and just as fictitious- reasons for stopping the fight.

Sorry for being so long-winded, but at the time I very carefully followed all the news of that fight, and, if not corrected, as time goes by, people get the wrong story.

Lewis already turned Vitali's face into mince meat. Calz never even got in the ring w/ Dawson. its not even comparable.

Here are the blunt facts of the matter.

Vitali has never faced anyone who landed more on him than Lennox Lewis. Vitali admitted this in the interview.

LL has had tougher fights than the Vitali one. Briggs, Mercer, Mcall, and Rahman ALL did more damage than Vitali did.
