Yes and you read correctly. It’s like that in a lot of sports. They will only know athletes that they watched as kids. But will not know about all athletes once they start their careers. Fans are surprised when a boxer doesn’t know about another boxer. They think athletes have the same amount of time on their hands as them. To research everybody and check everyone’s resume on boxrec.
Examples: I knew less pro boxer’s names and watched less fights when I was actively sparring in a boxing gym in the Bronx. Now with all this in my hands, I follow more boxers.
Same thing with baseball. I knew less about players when I played it.
When you participate in these sports, it feels like a 24/7 thing. You just don’t have time to look up everyone’s names until they make some noise.
