Mexican ringmaster Juan Manuel Marquez, who bedeviled Manny Pacquiao when he was not on the seat of his pantalones in their two classic bouts, held a media day at his La Romanza training base in Mexico City Wednesday.
Among those in attendance was Golden Boy bossman Oscar de la Hoya, who has taken on the role of Marquez shill in the Sept. 19 promotion while Boxing Banker Richie Rich Schaefer does his part signing the praises of opponent Floyd Mayweather.
Can it really only be a fortnight from Saturday that these two finally square off? I'm not ribbing anyone but this is a big fight which has really snuck up on the general public.
Meanwhile, I have yet to find a single credible boxing guy (or gal) who believes the smaller, slower Juan Ma, for all his skill, can upset PBF and hand the Mouthy Menace his first loss in 40 pro bouts.
In fact, just the opposite. Many fight figures are now thinking that, at age 36, Marquez might unsurprisingly be contemplating retirement after this bout especially if he thinks, which is probably right, that Chapter 3 against Pacman will never occur.
This may shock and stun some Golden guys but, I, for one, hope this is a crackerjack fight. At the end of the day, my life is in boxeo and, putting personalities aside, I'd love to see this fight turn into a corker which will put some needed wind in boxing's sails going forward.
Having said that, I hear Mayweather was spotted in a Las Vegas bicycle shop Wednesday in the 10 speed section.
A real surprise would be seeing Mayweather take to Marquez from the outset of their bout.
Maybe just hoping for a fight that is not a stinker is the best we can expect.
