Isaac Cruz couldn't knock out an aged former champion Saturday night, but he was plenty active and accurate enough to defeat Francisco Vargas. Mexico City's Cruz consistently landed the harder punches in their 10-round lightweight bout and won a unanimous decision over the bloodied Mexican veteran. Judges Jesse Reyes (97-92), Randy Russell (99-90) and Eva Zaragoza (100-89) scored the 23-year-old Cruz the winner of a fight Showtime televised from Toyota Center in Houston as part of the Jermall Charlo-Juan Macias Montiel undercard.

Cruz fought dirty. The ref warned and warned but took no points away. Cruz consistently head butted hit behind the back and head and the ref did nothing. Worst ref I’ve seen in some time

Oh yeah man, Cruz 'accidently' launched his head at Vargas's eye like an uppercut. Just like he accidently did the previous dozen times.

When they said the Ref only had about 30 professional fights, I was a little concerned. Not only did he allow Cruz to fight incredibly dirty and head but the entire fight, his actions in that final minute were shameful. The cut was horrific, the doctor waffled then said that they needed to stop the fight. The ref then pressured the doctor to let it continue. Cruz went right after that cut with more headbutts and punches. Terrible.
