When Munroe beat Jeffries in an exhibition the press wrote about it as if some upstart had just upset the champion. Munroe was not in line for title shot or thought of as a legitimate contender until after he won an exhibition with Jeffries. The press ran their story, conflated exhibitions with real boxing matches as if Jeffries wasn't held back by the stipulations of the exhibition, and put the champion in a position where he could and even was pushed to by the public and press to fight a no hoper.

Check Jeffries' record. Kicked Munroe's ass in the real match didn't he? Probably because exhibitions are not boxing matches.
