  • America has deep racial, religious, and cultural differences that make that improbable.

    There's a few athletes like Joe Louis or Michael Jordan that are almost universally beloved, but for 90% of athletes, they will be mostly popular by their racial, ethnic, or religious group, or even their region.

    Like we have the "coastal elites" vs. the "flyover states" as well in this country

    North vs, South

    We're just too screwed up to get on the same page like Eroll's talking about.

    COVID really exposed how deeply divided we are.

    • If Wilder spoke, acted and fought like he had some sense, I'd back him. That he's a fellow American would be the icing on the cake. But in this case, his being a one-dimensional fighter who makes wild, outlandish, ignorant statements when he wins AND when he loses, makes me not a fan. Him being American is simply not enough.

          • I’m rooting for Wilder to win as a fellow America. With that being said, I can still have an opinion on who I think may win based on styles and prior experiences.That’s the difference, rooting for who you want to win and who you think will win. It’s like years ago, I was rooting for Aaron Pryor but I thought Alexis Arguello was so polished as a fighter, that I thought he would knock Pryor out and it was hard to sit there and watch. After the fight started, and midway through the fight, I felt better about Pryor chances. Another example was Leonard vs Duran 1, I was rooting for Sugar but thought Duran was going to stop him before the fight.

              There is something wrong with rooting for your own because there is no such thing as your own. Your own is building blocks of literal racism and division.

              If you black and root for a guy because he's black, that is by the real definition of racism being the belief that different races possess distinct characteristics, abilities, or qualities, especially so as to distinguish them as inferior or superior to one another.

              Modern society has added everything they can to racism like discriminiation, sterotyping etc ---> those definitions stand on their own without race being part of them, thus they are their own word + definition without being compounded.

              I never root for the guy down the block, my own country, skin color etc. I vote for the guy I like and thats based on skill, desire to win, and having that something special the other guy doesn't have.
