This coming from a big Mayweather fan. In terms of optics for the sport today and those who don't know Pretty Boy Floyd, yes it was embarrassing. But there is a reality boxing fans should know that the casual public doesn't. Floyd isn't what he was. Logan was big. Floyd has always been safety first and is not a go out on his shield to knock a guy out type of fighter.
He simply couldn't knockout a big man in a boxing match at his age. I actually felt he could have, but he's slower and can't throw like he used to.
Those saying Canelo would murder him now. Yes probably. Why? Because Canelo has spent the past few years progressing as a young fighter. Mayweather has spent the past few years retired as an old entertainer. No surprise that a 30year old Canelo would beat a 44 year old Floyd.
Unfortunately, Floyd did probably do perception of pro fighters a disservice tonight and now anyone thinks they can truly beat a pro.
The reality is a 25 year old cruiserweight novice was able to lean and smother his way to the distance against an aged, small boxing great in a sparring exhibition for money where there was no incentive for Floyd to risk getting caught by the bigger man.
But the public will walk away with the image of "that's your great boxer?" Not understanding who Floyd was and what this sparring event was.
PS: Floyd doesn't say he would beat today's top pro boxers. He says health is most important. I think he knows he doesn't have THAT kind of fight in him post 40.
