Devin Haney parts are at the bold:
Let me start by saying that Crawford is a real fighter: he's gritty (I feel like Errol lost some of his dog, but T-bud is still mean), he's a very good offensive fighter, really good footwork, and he's smooth switch hitter (though I think he's better while Orthodox). I mean there's a lot of reasons to admire Crawford. But, as i've seen that many people have realized within the last month or two, we can't really admire T-bud for his resume. I could breakdown everyone of his major wins to date, but I've come to realize that its nonsensical. Everyone knows that T-bud doesn't have the best resume, and I believe its either because he's being frozen out by PBC (not hating on PBC, just is what it is), or Top Rank is trying to protect their asset.
With this said, I think Devin Haney is going to be protected for most of his career, similar to how Crawford (FYI not saying it is or isn't Top Rank's fault just mentioning matchups that should've happened already) did not fight Mikey at 135 or 140, never fought Broner when Broner was at 135, just so happened to miss Matheyesse, Danny, Provodnikov (though he would've been old by then) at 140, or how right now, he's not fighting any of the top 10 fighters at WW. DAZN and Bill Haney are going to make sure Haney doesn't fight Teofimo, Ryan Garcia, or Tank Davis because they know that any of them boys at 135 will crack his chin. I mean there are a lot of similarities between T-bud in 2014 and Haney now. T-bud was labelled as a pure boxer, and Gamboa, his first real step-up fight, made him hit a chicken dance, just how Haney is labelled as a pure boxer, and Linarez, his first real step-up fight, made him it a chicken dance. Disclaimer: T-bud came back and whopped on Gamboa, Haney tucked his tail and held for the rest of the fight, clearly shows the different demeanors of the two fighters.
Pure hypothetical, What I think will happen is Haney will continue to fight "step-up fights," in this order: loser of JoJo Diaz and Fortuna (likely Fortuna), then the winner of JoJo Diaz and Fortuna (likely Diaz). Then, as an an excuse for his poor performance against the winner of JoJo Diaz vs Fortuna, he'll claim he was severely weight drained an he'll go up to 140. From there, he'll avoid Tank and Teofimo (though I think Teo will stay at 135) and he'll fight either Maurice Hooker, Zepeda, or more likely Postol (try and show he can do better against Postol than T-bud did, like how he attempted to do with Gamboa). After his step-up fights at 140, I think he'll fight Jose Ramirez (who would have taken more losses by now but would've beat up and comer a fight prior to get back into title contention) for a vacant title after Josh Taylor vacates or loses in 2 or 3 years. At the point where he fights Ramirez, he would've gain the confidence to fight a pretty hard hitting fighter, and I think Haney will school him by then, in a boring @ss punch and hold, Klitschko style fight. Then, he'll collect as many belts as he can fighting while not fighting Ryan, Teo, or Tank. From there the pattern will continue until someone is ready to cash out in 5 to 6 years and we FINALLY GET THESE F3CKING FIGHTS. Goodnight y'all.
