Like Demetruis said, Billy Joe did not make the necessary adjustments to prevent destructive blows from landing clean. Conversely, Billy Joe Saunders continued employing a dangerous and unsuccessful technique from the southpaw-stance to duck/leaned in a vain and desperate attempt to evade Alvarez right-hand.
As I highlighted in the gifs that shared, from round one Billy Joe was found-out, Alvarez had no trouble connecting through Saunder's poor defense. In spite the alarming damage that Alvarez was inflicting on Saunders early in the fight, Billy did not find a way to reduce or at least naturalize Alvarez method of attack : such as, turning your left-shoulder and parry the right-hand, possibly disturbing Alvarez balance with the added force to his own momentum and ideally counter with the right-hook ( if the pick works ).
More importantly and suitable for Saunders evasive-mobile-style, pivoting to the right. Yet, Saunders being taller, longer legged southpaw, failed to implement a basic proven defensive strategy against the right-hand from orthodox. I think that the fact that the short-legged less agile power-puncher dominates the lead-foot race, constantly throughout the contest, is an indictment to Billy's lack of skills and exposes his limited abilities.
I favor Saul Alvarez over Demetrius Andrade, this opinion on the boxing displayed between Alvarez vs. Saunders is unbiased, Billy Joe Saunder's is overrated, he ducked Demetrius Andrade, and now after this awful performance his team knows they made the right decision in avoiding Andrade ; Demetrius would of toyed with Saunders.
