  • Comments Thread For: Trainer: Billy Joe Saunders' Eye Socket Was Caved In, He Couldn't See

Mark Tibbs, the head trainer of former two-division world champion Billy Joe Saunders, says the boxer had no vision in his damaged right eye on Saturday - prompting him to quickly stop the fight with Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez. Before a crowd of over 73,000 fans at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Canelo stopped Saunders in eight rounds to unify the WBC, WBO, WBA super middleweight titles.

It was the right call. The eye socket was severely broken. That was a brutal punch right on that eye. Canelo is punching so hard lately. Good effort by Saunders, and may he recover fully.

Yes, there was trash talk from him but it's all part of the promotion. At the end of the day, two brave guys got in the ring and gave us a fight. It's a very dangerous sport.

The 'Monster' Naoya Inoue, fought Nonito Donaire for the 2019 FOTY and the WBSS bantamweight championship with fractures to his orbital-eye-socket. Inoue's eye injury came in the early rounds, but he did not quit. Billy-Hoe, found himself in trouble in the mid-rounds and wanted a way out, he did not respond like his cornerman wanted, that is code for '' HELP, I want out, stop the fight -- I'm not really about everything I said I was.''

Billy joe showed that Canelo can be out boxed, but to outbox him for 12 rounds, it will have to be someone who also stays in shape year round, not someone who gets in shape just for an upcoming fight. And there aren't many fighters around today who are that dedicated. Canelo almost has a Rocky Marciano -like mentality when it comes to training. He stays in tip top shape. That's why he predicted that he'll get Billy late in the fight. He knows the other guy isn't training as hard as him year round, and will fade at some point in the fight. He knows this because he himself was lacking in the conditioning department earlier in his career. The knock on him used to be that he fades late, that his punch output was low because he gets gassed. No one says that anymore. Anyone who Canelo believes can match him in conditioning and can also box, he stays away from. Boo Boo Andrade and Charlo, specifically. The other fighters, he catches them at the right time, or he waits for signs of slippage b4 he fights them. His wins are the results of his talent, conditioning, and the ability of his team to know when to avoid certain fighters, while picking other guys at the right time

I believe that he couldn't see. I even believe that quitting on his stool was the appropriate course of action. Just don't tell me that he didn't quit on his stool. Better and tougher warriors than Billy Joe Saunders have quit on their stool (I.e. Chavez, Duran, etc). It happens in boxing. However, when it happens to trash talking, ego based fighters like Saunders, their team and fans want us to call it something other than quitting on the stool. Well, sorry. I'm not saying he's not tough. Of course he is tough BUT he also quit on his stool in this fight.

Real-talk, Katie Taylor and Delfine Persoon, have been in tougher fights than Billy-Hoe Saunders.
