Exciting fights lure in new audience.

That...and giving people the feeling that they're getting their money's worth when they pay for a PPV event.

Which means, better quality cards top to bottom.

Rivalries keep the existing fan base watching.

Then you take boxing. Right now there is really no rivalries that can be marketed.

It also helps other sports usually being on free to air tv not FKIN PPV!!!!!!!!!!!

Who the hell outside of boxing fans will pay $50 for mayweather/marquez?? Seriously????
Boxing don't need rivalries, it needs to make it easy for the casual fan to follow.

It's called marketing and boxing promoters do a horrible job at it when it comes to the wider audience. They have no new ideas and don't copy the good ones set forth by other sports. Floys Mayweather Jr. had to invent a promotional/marketing tool. So I've come to the conclusion that boxing promoters do a terrible job of promoting.

Unless it's a country vs. country type thing it wouldn't be possible cuz the biggest rivalries in sports play at least once a year: Yankees-Red Sox, Buckeyes-Wolverines, Celtics-Lakers, etc.

On the other hand, the NFL doesn't promote have a huge rivalry and it's the most popular sport in the US.

i dunno if its fair to say floyd invented 24/7.

also the NFL puts a lot of money into promotion. all kinds of commercials. he send NFL players to do charity work, etc...

in any case, you can't compare NFL to boxing because the NFL has franchises where as boxing does not. the closest thing is a promotional stable, but that is not a regional thing where people from a region can get worked up about.
