Comments Thread For: When Does Today Become Timeless?

By Cliff Rold - In the age of social media, the acronym GOAT (greatest of all time) gets thrown around a lot. It makes sense. It's a good feeling to know one might be watching something more than just greatness and it's just plain fun to tell elders their idols have been replaced.

I must be in a boxing idiot world (some call it a parallel world), but in my world, I don't regard Canelo close to anything great, and it will never be. Maybe only in Mexico. With Canelo, I see a B level fighter at most, with B+ being my highest ranking in the current environment. To me, Mexicans like Juan Estrada are much better than Canelo, much, much better. Estrada is one of the rare ones I can give an A-.

Today becomes a magic when you actually live in it, without the politics of promotion.

Canelo is on a path to greatness. There is no question about that. If as expected, he destroys BJS and then unify the 168 division with a super charged victory over Plant, Canelo will be in the ATG conversation.
If he fights another 5 years and adds a dozen fights to his resume, the quality of those opponents will cement his ATG status. 168 and 160 divisions are stacked with talent. I doubt any of them can dethrone Canelo in a fight. And no, Canelo does not need to prove anything at 175 against much bigger guys.

Thank goodness, it’s your world as you astute put it. You can project it to us but it’s still just yours.
Canelo is 30 and will most likely fight a dozen more times, will most likely unify the 168 division, will most likely beat the top three guys at 160 and 168, will most likely fight again at 175 even though he doesn’t have to ... in the eyes of most (on a global scale), Canelo will go down as and ATG.

Canelo is good but not close to great. His career defining fight is a loss to Floyd where he was washed. He became a bitch right after, with so many questionable deeds, including blaming the Mexican cows for his drug use, and debilitating opponents with weight clauses. Nobody forgets 155. People remember.

Two B fighters fighting on Saturday.

Chavez going 89-0 while dominating two future hall of famers in Camacho & Rosario plus the thriller with a dynamic meldrick Taylor > than canelo’s whole career.
Morales trilogy with Barrera plus beating a prime pac > Canelo’s whole career.
barrera trilogy with morales and dominating an undefeated Hamed > Canelo’s whole career.
marquez 4 fights with pac > Canelo’s whole career

Main reason why the above was true is because pretty much all of these fights happened against prime opponents, were high quality action fights and there wasn’t any catch weight, rehydration clauses , belt dropping or avoidance of opposition. Just the best fighting the best. Every fight above involved hall of famers at their best except for meldrick Taylor who isn’t the hall of fame because Chavez took his prime early in that fight.

89-0! About forty debutants, forty journeyman, and he beat nobody world class, just a few overrated fringe world/top domestic guys. Canelo would destroy that bum who is no better than his son.
