Why Was Floyd Impossible to Catch With Left Hook

Dudes with a very good jab could land it on him

the occasional overhand right would get past Floyd’s shoulder roll

but boxing’s most lethal shot the hook wouldn’t land on Floyd

Probably because very few fighters he fought would lead off with a left hook.

Some may throw it in a combination but the problem is once you touched Floyd trying to set up a shot, he was gone before you could really put something together.

Obviously one common combination that fighters sometimes use is jab, right hand, left hook. But once you touched him with the jab to set up the combination, he had already got out of range so the hook never comes.

and it’s not easy to lead off with a left hook against a sharp counter puncher.

Also when you consider Floyd’s shell and positioning of his right hand, it’s extremely effective at blocking the left hook. He would simply just raise his arm and basically the whole side of his head was covered. And if you try to go downstairs with the hook it’s just a small adjustment and his body is covered too.

Cotto landed some lead left hooks on him but honestly not many throw that punch...Funny enough, that was one of Floyd's favorite punches. But Floyd would anticipate the hook very well and was able to dip out of the way. When he fought Oscar, the talk was about how Floyd would take his monster left hook...And Floyd pretty much avoided the hooks for majority of the fight but did eat one late in the 12th round.

Most tried the blueprint and never thought to fight fire with fire. The key was standing in front of his opponents the entire time, very poetic.
