PSA? Kinda like a PSA at least.
I seen this in a thread weeks ago and again just moments ago in another so I figured I'd explain to y'all exactly what hispanic is and what latino is and what the differences are so y'all can be less distracted by arguments that's are beside the point. Really, who a boxer is, doesn't matter, but y'all do love defining and lots of youse are Euros so can't be blamed for not knowing... so, let's get to it:
Hispanic - Lingual - Means you speak a language that is derivative of the Euro, og, Spanish language. That means a place like the Philippines is Hispanic.
Latino - Geographical - Mean you are from Latin America, or, the Americas that were once controlled by Spain and Portugal but not the French, English, Dutch, and other non-Iberian euros. You MUST be from one of the Americas to be Latino. The Philippines may be Hispanic but it is not Latino.
Amerindian - Genealogical - Means you come from indigenous Americans. Again, Filipino does not belong.
To be Hispanic, Latino, and Amerindian you must be from Latin America, descendant from indigenous peoples, and speak a version of Spanish.
They do not mean the same thing, I used Asia to illustrate.
Latin has **** all to do with Portuguese exclusively, dunno where y'all got that from even.
Neither one are actually ethnicities. What most people call hispanic or latino is actually european-amerindian. Let's pretend for a second England is not the name of that nation and so English is just a language not a language and nationality.
If English were just a language:
Anglo is an ethnicity = Amerindian
English is a language = Hispanic
British is a people from a geographic location = Latino
Surely y'all get it now?
We're brown because we're injun. We're Latino because our people were subjugated by, y'all can look it up, the official continuation of Rome. Like how the Holy Roman Empire now is not considered a continuation but if you asked them then they'd say it's Rome. The Spanish king was the holy roman emperor. Hence, Latin. We're Hispanic because we adopted the ruler's language.
One last note on Spain-Portugal, and this might just be for my fellow Latinos who have ****ed up explaining this already:
Colony period: 1492–1832
Iberian Union: 1578-1640
For a good chunk of real colonial history they were one nation. 1492 is a misleading beginning given the Spanish didn't even start moving to their colonies until the 1520s. 1578, when Spain and Portugal are one, is one generation into colonialists being born in the colony. It's one Latino because it's one empire that actually did the taking over and subjugating. When did Spain take Mexico? Yeah, and my definition every single one of them are Spanish, not Latino. Their kids would be the first Latinos and their kids' lifetimes overlap the union which is why y'all mugs is confused. It's not Spain or Portugal who defines Latino, it's both.
