Comments Thread For: Vito Mielnicki: Unsure How Long I'll Stay at 147, May Move Up

Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles - In the televised opener, sensational welterweight prospect Vito Mielnicki, Jr. (8-0, 5 KOs), displaying good poise, patience and power, scored an impressive KO victory over Jalisco, Mexico's N?e L?pez (10-4-1, 4 KOs) when referee Gerard White stopped the contest at 2:50 of the third round. In the second, the 18-year-old Mielnicki floored L?pez when he rolled under a lazy jab and landed a lightning quick straight right hand that dropped L?pez on the seat of his pants.

I think Vito is moving along well. But watching Ramos afterward, it made me think, that at the same weight, there might be a collision down the road. I would say Ramos is further along than Vito. But there is the thought that eventually there may be a meeting of these two. Both are great to watch. Seems that they're being brought up kinda slow to gain much needed experience.

He's damn near going the distance in half his fights. Idk about moving up to bigger guys. Power might get diminished even more &/or guys won't feel his power as much.

It’s because of his level of opposition which people truly don’t look into. They just assume that out of 8 fights 5 KOs is somehow not good enough. Most fighters start their careers with many loss journeymen to pad their records, get work and rack up KOs. Thus far his opponent’s combined record is 33-19. Out of the three he didn’t KO only one has been KOd. Perspective goes a long way and this kid isn’t being slow walked.

I don't think there is anything extraordinary about his competition level. It looks pretty middle of the road for a prospect to me. I'm sure there are plenty of guys who fought much lesser guys thus far & beyond cuz that's the road more traveled cuz most guys aren't on Vito's level. But for a promising prospect with some amateur accomplishments it's standard looking caliber of opposition. And most of that overall record happened in his last fight. His opponents were a combined 23-16 til this weekend.

Respect to Vito on stopping the best guy he's fought & a guy I expected to last the distance doe. I just don't think it bolds well for him to move up when he's damn near 50/50 on KOing guys this early in his career. If he's having trouble making weight I suppose he doesn't have a choice so I guess it might be necessary.

One thing I will say though is that dude is only 18 and still doesn't have his grown man strength. Shakur actually looks like a bigger puncher at 130 than he did at 126. Punches have more snap on them but that's also because he is gaining his man strength.

Vito is still a young pup and needs time to grow. No need to rush this guy. Ramos on the other hand? By all means get him better competition. He looks to a potential player in a few years at WW. He kind of came out of nowhere right or was he an established amateur?

Vito looks solid at 147 I don't get him moving up unless he's having issues making 147 but macmike100 Ramos is at 140 not 147 and I think that kid will be at 140 for a while don't see him moving up anytime soon

I think Ramos commented after the fight that he liked how he felt at 147 and he may stick there going forward. Dude is HUGE though, not sure how he cuts down to 140. But if he can continue making it, then might as well stay there for as long as he could.

I wouldn’t say middle of the road actually. They were calling the email champ Haney the second coming. Up to the point he was gifted his title his opponent’s combined record was 185-155. I do agree through on him staying at current weight. That’s if he can or maybe he breaks the mold and actually fights at his natural weight.

Devin is a bad example. He fought AWFUL opposition early on. He was going to Mexican bars or w/e & fighting guys like Adonis Creed did in the Creed film or some such bs. I wasn't sold on Devin for years because of his sh^tty opposition, while still a fan of the guy.

Look I'm not breaking the kids balls. I like him. I think he has a future in this game. I just don't think his power is impressive at all. And I think these guys who can't KO low level opposition become guys who virtually never KO world class opposition & that makes for a hard road to money & stardom in this sport like it or not. And this kid ain't exactly on Sweet Pea Whitaker or Money Mayweather level with the sweet science. And I think moving up 7lbs makes that road even harder for him with bigger guys who likely can take bigger shots. But again if he can't make 147 no more or that time is within sight, cuz this mofo is still growing, than fook he don't really got a choice so he gots to do what he gots to do.
