MANILA, Philippines - Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Jose Raul Canlas and hand specialist Dr. Noel Carillo said the other day interim WBA superflyweight champion Nonito Donaire Jr. should be ready to fight Mexico’s Jorge Arce – if he wins the IBF title – in Top Rank’s “Pinoy Power 3” card on Dec. 12 in Las Vegas.
Donaire was subjected to a battery of tests on his left hand at St. Luke’s Hospital in Quezon City last Saturday. Dr. Canlas supervised the examinations which included X-Rays and bone scans. Dr. Carillo confirmed no fractures in the hand which swelled after Donaire outpointed Panama’s Rafael Concepcion for the WBA crown last Aug. 15.
The decisive test was the bone scan which took about three hours. A radioactive dye was injected for photographs to be taken of Donaire’s hand so doctors could determine even the slightest degree of fracture. Donaire felt some pain in the back of his right hand after the fight but it was negligible as doctors concentrated on the left hand which has often bothered the Filipino Flash.
Donaire initially consulted Dr. Canlas in his Ala**** rehab clinic last Thursday. At first, Dr. Canlas feared a stress fracture in the left hand. But after the results of the tests came out, Dr. Canlas was relieved and said with rest and proper strengthening exercises, Donaire’s fight in December is “doable.”
Dr. Canlas marvelled at Donaire’s threshold of pain since he fought Concepcion despite the throbbing sensation in the left hand.
“He just gutted it out,” said Dr. Canlas. “He’s a very brave fighter. He complained of some pain in his shoulders and elbows, too. It’s incredible how he was able to fight at such a high level and go 12 rounds. He told me he had a mission to fulfil, that he couldn’t back out of the fight, even if he had the option because Concepcion failed to make the weight.”
Dr. Canlas, whose mother is the late Sen. Ninoy Aquino’s cousin, said Donaire’s gesture of dedicating the fight to the memory of former President Cory was deeply appreciated by the family. “With (the Aquinos’ daughter) Ballsy announcing that Nonito has been ‘adopted’ as a ‘bunso’ brother, that makes us cousins,” said Dr. Canlas.
In the tests, Dr. Canlas said he looked out for microfractures but found none.
“Talking with Nonito, we suspect he hurt the hand over five months ago, even before the (Raul) Martinez fight last April,” said Dr. Canlas. “It healed but he ****** it up again, causing more trauma. We figured there was bleeding in the hand which made it swell. We call it a ‘plastic deformity’ where the largest bone in the hand was traumatized. I noticed from when I saw his hand first last Thursday, the swelling had considerably gone down two days later.”
Dr. Canlas said there will be no need to fit Donaire with a hand brace because there is no fracture.
“He’ll need to rest the hand, meaning no closed-fist push-ups for the moment,” said Dr. Canlas. “I’ll examine it again in about two or three weeks then we’ll design a strengthening program of exercises to build up the hand. The rehab should take another six weeks, giving Nonito more than enough time to go full blast in training for his December fight.”
Donaire will consult Dr. Canlas in his Ala**** clinic this afternoon on a rehab program for his shoulders and elbows. “He’s feeling some residual pain so I suggest an exercise program now while his hand is healing,” said Dr. Canlas. “He’ll be as good as new.”
Donaire will take advantage of his break from training by making TV appearances on the GMA network. He recently taped two episodes of “Celebrity Duets” and is lined up to film an episode with Manny Pacquiao on the new sitcom series “Show Me The Manny.”
Donaire and Pacquiao recently met up on the set of “Show Me The Manny.”
“I’m really a big fan of Manny,” said Donaire. “I call him our Moses for leading all of us Filipino boxers to the promised land. He opened the doors for us. I was thrilled when Manny congratulated me for winning over Concepcion. He watched the fight on TV and told me the Filipino nation was proud of my victory.”
