Honestly, there really isnt any other way. Americans would rather support the ethnic subgroup of say, their great grandmothers orgin, than support the fighters here. Often times people talk about "who is a draw" or "who isnt a draw".
These days its honestly about playing into the hands of which reigon can draw the biggest ethnic fanbase and pander to that particular culture. Basically for instance, a guy like kermit cintron who has a "puerto rican" background, basically raised here, lived nearly all his life here, tries his best to pander to a puerto rican contingent because he knows there is just no way he can draw fans any other way.
Or take Brian Viloria for instance, this guys fought in the olympics for the united states, but at the end of one of his fights, throws the filipino flag over his shoulder and is then briefly honored with a following in the phillipines because of it.
Nobody wants be to american. And dont give me any B.S about styles, or being exciting, or being humble. If you represent another country, youll get a following from that particular ethnic sub culture. Think fernando vargas, youd never know him and mayweather, tarver, david diaz, reid etc all fought on the same team. Because he felt more connected with representing mexico as a pro than what he really was, an american.
I genuinely feel that boxings popularity suffers when all these PPVs basically pander to an ethnic fanbase, for instance:
Latin Fury= PLEASE LATINOS, BUY OUR PPV WHILE Juanma and JCC Jr TAKE ON BUMS
Pinoy Power: PLEASE, LETS PIGGYBACK ON MANNYS FAME SO WE CAN MAKE MORE MONEY ON THE STRENGTH OF ANOTHER FIGHTER WHILE HIS FANBASE STILL CARES
While americans are more focused on say, football season, the MLB Playoffs, or the upcoming basketball season, basically, i think i am ranting because what happened with paulie malignaggi tonight, and the way kellerman described why he lost is true.
Malignaggi doesnt have some huge ethnic following. Hes not going to score knockouts every time. Hes not going to just draw a bunch of italian-americans all over the east coast on the strength of his name. He is a pure boxer, and i feel he was robbed, but the bigger microscope was when Kellerman said "the market chose diaz". In other words, if you cant draw a large ethnic subgroup to your fight, or unless you pull antics that make people hate you and you can become a good B-Side, then you arent good enough to win. Thats all boxing is now.
How big is Malignaggis follwing? Dawsons? Williams? Bradleys? Pavliks?
I garuntee you, if any of these guys were apart of larger contingent ethnic groups, they have enourmous followings based on just representing somewhere else as opposed to here.
Without boxing on ABC like before, without promotion of Amatuer tourneys like before, without free tv boxing, all were going to get is **** like we saw last night. I am irate, i just cant believe malignaggi would get robbed like that.
