Cotto-Pacquiao: The Betting People Have It Wrong

By Manuel Perez: It was pretty funny reading how Manny Pacquiao is favored 2-1 over WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto by gamblers. Obviously, the bettors don’t have clue one about boxing and are just throwing their money away by putting it on the Filipino fighter.

They’re looking at Pacquiao’s wins over Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton, and figure that those are the biggest stars of the sport and falsely think that Pacquiao can do the same thing against a talented fighter in his prime. What a bunch of imbeciles. I’m not a betting man, but if I was, I’d a make mint on this fight by putting the deeds of my house on the line and betting it all on Cotto.

What we have here is people not focusing on the whole picture when they look at Pacquiao. Instead of seeing his selective matchmaking against shot fighters or ones with little talent, they that Pacquiao is the real deal because he beat Hatton and De La Hoya. They must been on vacation or asleep when Pacquiao fought Juan Manuel Marquez and got a handful of problems.

That’s alright. If those gamblers are dumb enough to throw their money away betting on Pacquiao, then they deserve to lose their money. I’ll be here knowing I’m right and won’t lose a penny. Pacquiao only has one thing going for him in this fight and that’s his hand speed.

That’s nothing though. Cotto is going to squash him like a bug with his better power, timing, accuracy and defense. Pacquiao is still pretty much the primitive fighter that he was when his trainer Freddie Roach started training him years ago. Pacquiao makes all the same mistakes on offense and just a crude fighter in terms of boxing skills.

The only reason Pacquiao has succeeded in recent years is because his trainer has been like an old fox in selecting his opponents. The one thing that ole Nostradamus Roach is good at is hand picking beatable opponents for Pacquiao. But he’s overshot his mark with the Cotto fight. In fact, I think Roach is starting to lose his magic touch for picking softies for Pacquiao.

This is going to be like Custer’s last stand for Pacquiao. Roach must have had delusions of grandeur or something because Cotto is way off the map better than Pacquiao in my expert opinion. I suppose this will be a good thing because it will knock Roach down a peg when Pacquiao gets destroyed on November 14th. Pacquiao’s speed won’t help him in this fight because Cotto is going to swarm him, encircle him, and pick Pacquiao off with jabs and power shots.

Basically, Pacquiao will never have a chance in this fight and will be decimated by Cotto. And all those people that bet big money on Pacquiao will be sorry that they didn’t listen to me and heed my advice. You got to look at the whole picture when you look at Pacquiao. He’s beaten a bunch a shot fighters and a slew of others that are nowhere near the class of Cotto.

Cotto has been dissed way too hard since the Clottey fight. I'm surprised so many cats think Pac blitzes him easily.

Although I think Cotto has a better chance than Vegas thinks...I still think they know more than us. They ARE billionaires and the key for the line is to draw action from both sides with a line like that.

That actually happeans quite a bit in this sport which is why I love ******** on boxing over all other sports. There is another thing to consider though boxing lines are set to create action so money comes in evenly, how the line starts is only slightly related to who they think will win, it is who they think the money is going to come in on.

How a line moves from the open is how the betting public feels about the fight, although public opinion s not always the best way to judge who will win a fight.

I love how Pacfans are so sure Pac is going to beat Cotto, as though he's a tune-up.

It wasn't too long ago that they were trying to revoke Manny's boxing license in the Philippines to try and prevent the match with ODLH at welterweight. I think there was even a prayer campaign for Manny since he was facing a fighter who could presumably inflict irreparable damage.

Meanwhile, they talk like this fight will be no big deal. This fight is much more dangerous for Manny, since he’s fighting an active, dominant welterweight who won’t be weight drained or way past his prime. Even at the catchweight limit of 145, Cotto will have no trouble with it since he weighed in at 146 for his last fight. If some people are impressed with Manny’s performance against DLH, just think for a moment about what Miguel Cotto would have done to the same DLH Manny faced.

Also, the writer here is spot on when he says Roach’s attempt at cherrypicking for Pac is way off this time. Team Pac must be thinking Cotto is shot, possibly based on his performance against Clottey. They must be forgetting Cotto fought with a huge gash over his eye for most of the fight, not to mention that Clottey’s no pushover.

In any case, they should be praying even harder for Manny this time, cause he’s going to get smashed by Cotto in November. I don’t see it going the full 12, since Cotto knows he’s got nearly every advantage except speed, which he’s proven he can handle, and we all know Pac will be coming to fight. Unfortunately for him it will be his downfall this time, and it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone except the deluded Pacfans who think he’s God.

It's a good article from a Puerto Rican sports' journalist. Very nationalistic…
