Toney and Floyd use it differently, though. Floyd leans back a lot which is why he gets called for elbows alot. Toney stands in front of his opponent, rolls left and right and ducks to the front.

      There's 3 types of defense.

There's block, parry, and evade. The shoulder roll combines blocking and parrying. The block as i've been taught should only be a last resort.

Remember the point of boxing is to hit without getting hit back. So in actuality footwork and distance is the best defense. You'll never get if you're never within range.

No it's not. It is who can last longer. If not getting hit helps you last longer, then so be it.

If not getting hit is the point of boxing, then alot of ATGs shouldn't be ATGs. lol

If your an orthodox fighter shoulder roll is not as effective fighting southpaws.

But bobbing and weaving tires you out. And, up close, you can bob right into a shot. At least in the PCS or Shoulder Roll, you won't "walk into" something. you'll mostly be static if you get hit.

It takes a certain talent and athletic ability to master it. Some try it and get caught flush with a punch. Also who you are fighting makes a difference too.

It isn't the best form of defense, because very few fighters can pull it off, however, it is the best LOOKING form of defense when it is used effectively. Watching Toney roll punches is a thing of beauty.

It's a good type of defense, and excellent for counter punching too, but could be pretty risky. You should have great reflexes to be good at it. I think Floyd is the best using it.

it is the best in my opinion, but its also the hardest to master. Joan Guzman does a good job with it as well.
