Naito-Kameda: Why Networks Should Care (But Won’t)

By Jake Donovan - Ever stop and wonder what would happen to other US-based professional sports if they were to only buy American, and rarely if ever travel beyond our borders?

They’d probably be on par with the state of our current game.

The insistence is that we’re looking at a fall season for the ages, and there’s no question that the schedule is loaded – if it remains pat.

One centerpiece has already been removed, with news of Kelly Pavlik forced to postpone his middleweight title defense against Paul Williams, with the threat looming of the fight being canceled altogether. [details]

Nice article Jake, I wonder how big Koki can become if he wins this fight. I'm looking forward to seeing the fight on stream if it isn't picked up.(Hopefully we get a good stream)

Pool's record isn't much but he's the best opponent Kameda has fought in a while. I think he's a little overrated anyways but what can make a Naito fight interesting is that maybe Naito is slipping a little bit, he looked less than extraordinary in his last fight. The Naito that beat Wonjongkam would've beaten Kameda quite handily I think.

I'm kind of skeptical about this fight being materialized not because I don't trust Donovan but because Koki has avoided all champions he's ever mentioned. He issued an open challenge to Naito last year when Naito barely retained his belt against his compatriot Shimizu, but he withdrew from the fight saying that there were too many cans of worms on Naito's part. At the very end of the last year when then WBA titleholder Sakata was knocked out, Koki yet again issued an open challenge to Denkaosan Kaovichit and withdrew from the fight without any fair reason. Most of the Japanese boxing fans are being dubious of Koki's statements. I for one wants him to man up and face either champion as quickly as possible, but that is not going to happen considering the Kameda family policy.

So I guess the winner of this fight would face Wonjongkam next? That would crown a Ring Magazine Flyweight champion.
