Regardless of what the Mexico constitution says I always had the impression that Mexicans always kind of rejected American born mexicans to represent them.. They hated Oscar for beating JCC and I remember watching the Vargas DLH fight and mexicans were cheering for Vargas.. Totally understandable though...

I've heard him say it before, I was at the first Morales/Espada fight here in Vegas and Duran was there. The Mexican fans mobbed him and he put on a sombrero, he gave an interview after the fight for Univision I think and he talked about his Mexican heritage. I think back in the day he was pissed because the Mexican fans would hound him saying Pipino Cuevas was going to kick his ass.

When Roberto Duran was training to fight Carlos Palomino at Madison Square Garden, he worked out at Howard Albert's gym, an old factory loft in the Garment Center, just a few blocks from the new Garden.

It was summertime, and sweltering, and every Latino worker in the garment area-- and their families-- would go to watch their hero train at lunchtime.

The gym was like a steam room, and jammed cheek-to-jowl with the adoring. . They pressed so close; they barely left Duran enough room to do his floor exercises. And then he went into the ring to shadow box.

Spanning what looked like a crowded subway, you could see chests swell and faces full of pride. Plump mothers holding babies in their arms stood right at the
ring apron, while their little children looked up saucer-eyed at this god.

In the midst of all of this, somebody in the back--unbelievably! -- kept yelling at Duran in Spanish: "PIPINO CUEVAS WILL KILL YOU!

Duran paid him no mind and continued to shadow box. But the heckler was relentless: "PIPINO CUEVAS WILL KILL YOU! "PIPINO CUEVAS WILL KILL YOU!

Finally, Duran fixed a glare at him, stretched as far over the ropes as he could--just above the glowing faces of mothers and infants--and yanked down his trunks, grabbed his nuts, and roared in Spanish: "PIPINO CUEVAS CAN SUCK MY ****!

Oscar is not a real mexican. A real mexican fighter is not just about race but how you fight in the ring. What Oscar pulled against Tito made him lose the "Real mexican fighter" title. He had the nation on his back and gave away the last 3 rounds, especially to a p.r.. Being a real mexican fighter is not only where you are born but how you carry yourself and fight. Due to that I personally consider Juan Diaz a real mexican fighter. Oh and by the way you have to speech perfect spanish

duran is half mexican so no he is not

I was born in mexico and my bro was born here but we were raised in the u.s. we are both raised by mexican parents and have mexican customs. Speech perfect spanish and he considers himself 100% mexican. It's not where you are born but how you are raised more then anything.

p.s. if you have plucked eyebrows and earings you are not mexican

Not really, the Mexican fans back then actually hated him but jumped on his back because the Rican/Mex rivalry against Tito. He really ****ed up the last rounds in that fight though, the people that hated him loved it because they always thought he was a pretty boy *****. The people that backed him for the fight really felt like he pussed out and didn't fight like a Mexican but in the end they all paid. That's the reason he was always a big box office hit, love him or hate him they all paid to watch.
