It’s the first question asked when a bone has been tossed to the boxing nation, one that has become cynical at heart. For so long, the expectation is to receive bad news, that we can’t even take the good in stride.
Why haven’t you been doing this all along?
It’s the most commonly asked question whenever the viewing public is offered a card featuring more than one worthwhile fight. It was the question on the mind of many a scribe the moment Golden Boy Promotions announced a stacked lineup for its September 19 pay-per-view headliner between Floyd Mayweather and Juan Manuel Marquez.
Are they doing it to ensure a competitive evening with U F C 103? Is it an indication that ticket sales remain slow, or at least not to the expectations of those heavily invested in the event?
But it’s not just limited to blockbuster events. News of the “Super Six Super Middleweight Tournament” received its fair share of praise, though not of it unconditionally. As much praise as the concept has received, there has been as much discussion of possible scenarios that can throw the tournament for a loop.
Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth, they used to say. Today, we look at those same gift offers as ulterior motive.
That level of skepticism helps skew our view of any given worthwhile telecast, like the tripleheader airing live from Houston, Texas this weekend (Saturday, HBO, 9:45PM ET/PT). [details]
