A Good Card Doesn’t Require Justification, Just Attention

    By Jake Donovan - Why?

It’s the first question asked when a bone has been tossed to the boxing nation, one that has become cynical at heart. For so long, the expectation is to receive bad news, that we can’t even take the good in stride.

Why haven’t you been doing this all along?

It’s the most commonly asked question whenever the viewing public is offered a card featuring more than one worthwhile fight. It was the question on the mind of many a scribe the moment Golden Boy Promotions announced a stacked lineup for its September 19 pay-per-view headliner between Floyd Mayweather and Juan Manuel Marquez.

Are they doing it to ensure a competitive evening with U F C 103? Is it an indication that ticket sales remain slow, or at least not to the expectations of those heavily invested in the event?

But it’s not just limited to blockbuster events. News of the “Super Six Super Middleweight Tournament” received its fair share of praise, though not of it unconditionally. As much praise as the concept has received, there has been as much discussion of possible scenarios that can throw the tournament for a loop.

Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth, they used to say. Today, we look at those same gift offers as ulterior motive.

That level of skepticism helps skew our view of any given worthwhile telecast, like the tripleheader airing live from Houston, Texas this weekend (Saturday, HBO, 9:45PM ET/PT). [details]

Oddly, the undercard is the reason to buy this ppv. The undercard is stacked top to bottom with great fights while the main event is a typical boxing mismatch throwaway. The other fights - not the main event - are worth the price of admission here.

My personal opinion but I feel the weight and size is too great in the main event, combined with Floyd's speed, it's not a matchup I'm wanting to see. But I do hope Marquez can pull off some magic and make a go of it. I'm not holding my breath though, given the physical mismatch that it is.

This isn't the first time an effort has been made in the past year or two to have meaningful (not necessarily "name" boxers, but meaningful fights) on undercards, it's just that they are few and far between, and appreciated when they do happen. Boxing undercards hit their lowest point in the Oscar-Pac fight, where every undercard horribly mismatched fight made viewers feel a little more embarrassed about the sport. On ppv's the fights should be step up fights or meaningful challenges, at least in an ideal sporting world.

WTF? He was talking about this weekend's card, not the Floyd fight.

I like this weekend's card and I can't wait to see it. Paulie's last chance IMO.

I believe that Mayweather is too young, and too big for Marquez, who, after all, has had all his losses when at a lesser weight, and is really going into "uncharted waters" with a good-not great- skilled fighter, at the very ripe age of 35-6.

            Marquez just isn't that good.

Ishe Smith and Paulie Malignaggi are on the card. 2 fighters that shouldn't be allowed on FNF's because they are so boring.

                    .
Question, was the "weight and size" too much when Hopkins moved from 160 to 175 to fight Tarver? And Tarver was active.
