Middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik had recurrence of a staph infection on his hand, forcing his Oct. 3 title defense against Paul Williams to be postponed, Top Rank spokesman Fred Sternburg told ESPN.com on Monday.

Sternburg said the HBO fight will be reschedule in November, still to take place at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J.

A news conference in New York city to formally announce the fight was scheduled for Tuesday, but was called off after a number of people involved in the fight had already arrived in New York, where they received the news.

Pavlik manager Cameron Dunkin, who flew to New York on Monday morning, was headed to Pavlik's hometown of Youngstown, Ohio, Monday afternoon to meet with Pavlik and his team, Sternburg said.

The kickoff news conference was rescheduled for Sept. 1, Sternburg said.

I hate Kelly Pavlik now...they should change his nickname to Dr. Ironfist...

Staph infections are no joke, MERSA is a very big problem in athletics. I was hoping Pavlik just had run of the mill staph but it could be the bad stuff it appears.

Staph has ended a decent ammount careers in the NFL.

being reported on ESPN. injury of some sort to pavlik's hand i believe a staph infection. Sucks but **** happens, hope Paviik is able to recover fast!
