As members of Nonito Donaire’s entourage whooped it up after being declared winner over the overweight and tough-as-nails Rafael Concepcion of Panama, Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum wasn’t as ecstatic as he had expected he would be.
Perhaps, it’s because Arum has so gotten used to seeing Manny Pacquiao annihilate his opponents with so much ease that the Harvard-educated lawyer’s taste for the sublime has reached the level of an art critic.
“I wasn’t thrilled. He could have fought much better,” Arum told the Bulletin less than 24 hours after Donaire became a two-division champion with a clear-cut victory over Concepcion Saturday night (Sunday in Manila) at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas.
Donaire, who had relinquished his International Boxing Federation flyweight (112 lbs) crown some months ago, now holds the World Boxing Association super-flyweight (115 lbs) title and is obviously raring to add more in an effort to emulate the incomparable Pacquiao.
Still, Arum pointed that Donaire was at a disadvantage, having hurt his hand early in the fight and fought somebody who was a lot heavier than he was, prompting the Top Rank chief to ponder about staging another showcase of Filipino talent sometime in December.
As it turned out, Arum sounded more upbeat when told about super-lightweight Mark Jason Melligen, who easily stopped his Mexican foe in the undercard.
“He’s a tremendous talent and we’ll be seeing more of him,” said Arum, who was also disenchanted with the result of the world featherweight title clash between Steven Luevano of the US and Bernabe Concepcion of the Philippines.
“We’ll do a rematch in December when we hold Pinoy Power 3," said Arum, whose promotional outfit is oozing with Filipino talent.
Ringsiders thought Donaire could have easily manhandled the plodding Concepcion, whose style was tailor-made for Filipino. But Concepcion proved to be tougher than advertised as he withstood the best Donaire could offer.
Arum said Donaire can still fight one more time before the year comes to a close after being assured by the Philippine-born California-based boxer that the injury would heal in time for a December assignment.
