I don't know about "ruined", but Meldrick Taylor and Fernando Vargas were never quite the same after their defeats to Julio Cesar Chavez and Tito Trinidad. I think their decline was also from their styles in general in taking too much punishment. They both were still very formidable fighters after those losses, but not quite the same. Taylor came closer to regaining his old form, as he had one of his best wins and performances a year after losing to Chavez, but still, the punishment of the fights and gym wars added up.

Davey Moore was never the same after Roberto Duran, David Reid after the fight with Tito, and Jeff Lacy after losing to Calzaghe. Lacy's decline seems both mental and physical. He had shoulder problems, and also just doesn't seem to fight with enough confidence.

Why people act like his speech problems and brain damage is only from one fight is beyond me.

People don't act like Ali's brain damage is from Manila alone.

His brain damage is from all the punishment he took in his career, both in the ring and in the gym.

His speech was fine 5 months later when he won a rematch with Ramos, and it was for awhile.
