EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: NONITO DONAIRE
By Ryan Burton
Ryan Burton: What effect do you think moving up to super flyweight will have on you?
Nonito Donaire: I think that going down in weight is actually more difficult for me. I have less weight to lose this way (laughing). I am confident that I am going to be able to get another belt. To me it was a decision I had to make. I am confident I will get another title at 115 then even at 118 and 122. That is the confidence I have being a fighter going into that ring.
RB: Did you change anything in preparation for this fight?
ND: Not really. I am out there training and I do the best that I can. I know one thing and that is to avoid a punch. Martinez was strong and Darchinyan was strong. Concepcion is strong and another former world champion. For me it is another chance to prove I am one of the elite guys. I just have to get past these guys and make things happen.
RB: How is your confidence right now?
ND: My confidence is always high. Everytime I go into the ring I want to feel like I am the underdog and the challenger. That drives me and brings me to train really hard to know I have this wall that I need to break down and not that I am the wall that they need to break down.
RB: Do you think your speed is your biggest asset in this fight?
ND: Well I think it is my secondary asset. I think my power is my biggest asset and I think I have the power to take this guy out. If that isn't the case and he turns out to be tougher than I expect him to be then speed will be the thing that can take me to victory.
RB: How high up in weight do you think you realistically can go and still be effective?
ND: Look at it this way, I was able to get down to 112 but at 115 I am almost at weight. I still have a little way to go but 118 to 122 is a more natural weight for me. Right now I am still cutting down to get to 115.
RB: There are a lot big names at 122 with Lopez, Marquez and Vazquez to name a few. Would you like to move up to that weight class in a year or so?
ND: You see the smile on my face right now. I love a good challenge. People may say they are better than me but that is what I want to be. I want to prove to myself and everyone that I belong in this game and can go up against the top guys. It definitely is an exciting weight class.
RB: Assuming you win this fight for do you go from here?
ND: That is really up to Cameron Dunkin and Top Rank want to do. I am only a fighter and that is really all I do. I don't want to get into the I want to fight this guy and I want to fight that guy thing. I just want to fight the best out there.
RB: Do you think you will stay at 115 after this fight?
ND: That depends. One person I have unfinished business with is Montiel. We were supposed to fight but it didn't happen and my mind is still set on fighting him. There also is Jorge Arce. If I move up to 118 I miss those guys. Whatever works I am will do. I am here to fight.
RB: Forget your fanbase for a minute. What you say to the fight fans who will be seeing you fight for the first time this weekend?
ND: I think that they should come see the fight. See that the little guys come in big packages and that it is going to be a ****. We want to prove to everybody that we are as exciting as the bigger guys. We have heart and we want to do our best because we are deprived of that limelight. We are hungry to show our best when we are out there.
RB: Even though I already know the answer I have to ask. Who is going to win the Pacquiao vs Cotto fight?
ND: Of course I have to go with my boy (Pacquiao). My boy has speed and my boy has power. Cotto is a champion. He has the power and the weight so he is tough. My boy is a monster and I have seen a lot from him already and he pushes me to fight better and I think he will get the win.
